No new Darkstalkers games in the near future
There will be no more entries in the Darkstalkers series in the near future according to Capcom’s Yoshinori Ono. Speaking in an interview with Japanese magazine Famitsu (and translated by Event Hubs) the producer revealed that the latest instalment was simply not successful enough to justify Capcom working on additional titles. My apologies,” said Ono. “We won’t be releasing a new installment in the Darkstalkers series anytime soon. As we didn’t manage to hit our sales targets for Darkstalkers Resurrection… so…” There is still some hope for fans of the series though as Ono says that all that if the game went on to sell more copies that might allow for a sequel to be made, “Well, in that case all you have to do is buy about 4 million copies of Darkstalkers Resurrections!”
Darkstalkers: Resurrection launched last March on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Marketplace to praise from critics. The title was not a new entry into the series but rather a HD remastering of Night Warriors: Darkstalkers’ Revenge and Darkstalkers 3, to include updated graphics, online multiplayer and other modern features. At the time of release, Capcom revealed that the game had failed commercially.
The Darkstalkers series has been ongoing since the original launch of Darkstalkers: The Night Warriors in 1994. The fighting games have since seen five full releases in the US and Europe, although the Japanese versions of the games, known as Vampire rather that Darkstalkers, have had additional titles that didn’t make it to other markets. Despite receiving strong critical acclaim and being considered an excellent fighting series by fans of the genre, the franchise has never been a commercial success. Although the series does have a loyal and devoted cult following, but this has never been big enough for Capcom to invest significant resources into development and promotion.
