Official Korrasami Art To Debut At Gallery
As the Nickelodeon series The Legend of Korra ran though its four seasons first on Nickelodeon and then on Nicktoons and its website, the fanbase became particularly attached to the possibility of Korra and her heiress friend Asami falling in love, though no cartoon on a kids’ network had ever been allowed to depict lesbians (“Clarence” beat them to the punch a few months earlier on the male side).
Then, in the last two minutes of the series, to everyone’s surprise, it really happened. Korra and Asami joined arms, entered the Spirit World portal, gazed into each other’s eyes and — pan up, Chinese lettering, cut to black, credits. The creators had to confirm Korra and Asami’s bisexuality later, because it was as far as Nickelodeon would let them go.
In the months since that ending, fans have been starved to see something, ANYTHING depicting their budding romance in a little more detail, and fanart has been created by the bucketload to fill that hole (though, lately, the shipping nuts at Deviantart appear to have moved on to Dipper and Pacifica). Now the first piece of official, honest-to-goodness Korrasami art, drawn and painted by Bryan Konietzko himself, will make its debut at Gallery Nucleus in Alhambra, California. It’ll be part of an Avatar and Korra themed art show that will last for two weeks.
The piece is titled “Turtle-duck Date Night,” and unlike most fanart it doesn’t take place in the Spirit World, but some time after: below the vine-entangled Harmony Tower, Korra and Asami cuddle up inside a rental boat designed to look like a common turtle-duck. Both Mike and Bryan (the show creators) will be at the gallery debut on Saturday, March 7th, 6:00pm to 10:00pm, and if you get in line fast enough you’ll be able to have something signed by them. Maybe the poster, if you can get one.
Only 100 copies of the artwork will be printed and sold, and proceeds will be donated to an LGBT suicide hotline.
