Another 3DS Homebrew Exploit Caused By eShop Game
It wasn’t that long ago that the DS game Cubic Ninja was discovered by hackers to open the Nintendo 3DS up to homebrew applications. Nintendo, seeing the obvious potential for piracy, quickly closed the loop and removed Cubic Ninja’s digital version from the eShop. Then Cubic Ninja was found to have a second exploit, Again, it was patched.
This week the game of Whack-A-Mole continued with an indie game titled Ironfall: Invasion. Homebrew developer Jordan “Smealum” Rabet discovered a new exploit that could be triggered by the game, and prepared a special program called Ironhax that would take advantage of it. Luckily for Nintendo, the man announced his find with a video clip on Vine, and didn’t intend to make Ironhax available until a certain scheduled time. Before he could do it, the game was removed from both the US and European eShops. Ironfall: Invasion was a digital title, and there is no physical release to fall back on this time.
The moral for Nintendo is that you can never be too careful. The moral for homebrew hackers is to speak in whispers. This is a lesson Rabet has not learned — he’s currently, loudly telling homebrew enthusiasts to start downloading the 3DS YouTube app for a….reason he’ll explain later.
