Ant-Man Escapes Pixels to Reclaim Box Office Top Spot
And so the curious case of Ant-Man continues. Last week, it got the No.1 spot, however, it was the second lowest Marvel opening of all time. Many were curious how it would do in its second week. Well, it did get the top spot once again, but the drop off was steep. In addition, it nearly lost to runner-up Pixels, a critically panned movie.
According to Rentrak, Ant-Man made $24.8 million dollars over the weekend. For the record, that’s a 57 percent drop off from its first weekend. Domestically, Ant-Man has only made $106 million. I know that doesn’t sound bad, but in comparison to other Marvel films, especially recent Marvel Cinematic universe films, it’s not much. To be fair, the movie has made $120 million in the overseas box office, so that’ll help it in the long run. You have to wonder though, especially with certain “not well known” Marvel properties on the way (Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange), will they follow the same path as Ant-Man? Or will they surprise people like Guardians of the Galaxy?
Back to the box office results, the much maligned Pixels was just behind Ant-Man with $24 million dollars. Another new release, Southpaw, had a surprising opening weekend of $16.5 million.
