Are Marvel and Sony Fighting Over Who Will Play Spider-Man?
So when Marvel Studios made a deal with Sony Pictures regarding the Spider-Man film franchise, initial reactions were mistakenly that Marvel had gotten the full rights, and that he’d be in the Marvel Cinematic Universe full time. Also, all future Spider-Man movies would be under the Marvel Studios banner. Sadly, that was not the case. In fact, the deal itself was actually a very complicated and specific endeavor. Spider-Man would be in the MCU, and would appear in Civil War, but Sony would get to make the solo films, with Marvel’s Kevin Feige and his team also attached as producers. Sony Pictures would make all the box office returns the Spider-Man movies. However, Marvel would have input on the movies, and actually assigned a team to help ensure the movies were done right. Caught up? Because this arrangement might already be causing friction.
During the Meet the Movie Press Podcast (viewable below), The Wrap reporter Jeff Sneider claims that the selection for actors to play Spider-Man is down to three: Tom Holland (How I Live Now), Charlie Plummer (Boardwalk Empire), and Matthew Lintz (Pixels).
Marvel apparently wants Plummer, while Sony wants Holland. Thus, the situation is causing friction between the two companies. So, who holds the trump card? Well, Marvel is only creatively overseeing the rebooted solo films, while Sony is paying for it, thus Sony has more weight here. If an overruling decision happens though, this could be the start of something bad.
The new Spider-Man will likely in appear in Captain America: Civil War. The new rebooted Spider-Man movie is scheduled for a July 28, 2017 release.
