Ben Affleck Approves of “R” Rating For BVS Home Release
Since Deadpool’s release, and record-breaking box office run, which is still going, many superhero film studios have been forced to ask whether an “R” rated version of their films might be better in the long run. For Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, the answer is “yes, and no”. For the theatrical release, they’re sticking to their PG-13 rating, whereas in a surprising twist, the directors cut home edition will have an “R” rating.
While this has been confusing for many, as it’s not been done in this manner before for superhero films, star Ben Affleck offers a rather wise view of this. He tells Entertainment Weekly:
“I’m a parent of young kids, and I feel like I wouldn’t want to have a Batman v Superman that I couldn’t show to my younger kids,” the actor says. “But on the same token, as an adult, I like to see movies that are R-rated. I think nowadays because we have so many means of distribution and ways that we can do different things, it’s the creative solution to a creative challenge.”
He goes on to show the respect he has for the multiple versions, noting how they allow different age groups to appreciate the film in different ways:
“You can have multiple versions and I can show my son and my daughters this movie and feel confident that the stuff isn’t too crazy, and then grownups can see larger version, [which is like] the red-band trailer. They can see the more adult version of that movie.”
Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice releases March 25th.
