Cartoon Network’s Plans For 2015
Cartoon Network, currently the greatest cable network in the world, has formally announced its show lineup for 2015 and even a bit of 2016. It’s a mix of new and returning favorites, some of which haven’t been on the network for some time. Also included are a handful of third-party acquisitions that are guaranteed to be thrown into the morning hours and not promoted at all until they run their course.
The least surprising news of the day is that Adventure Time has been renewed for another season. They’d have to be nuts not to, so there you have it. But the announcement was also made that, yes, the Powerpuff Girls are definitely being rebooted and the process is impossible to stop now. The TV special from 2013 was met with mixed reactions and lacked the involvement of creator Craig McCracken(who’s currently busy with Wander Over Yonder). He won’t have any input in the revived series either, which gives me cause for worry.
Last year CN put a handful of pilots on their website, one of which was “Here Comes The Royals” from the team behind Regular Show. That pilot has now been turned into a miniseries and will air later this year. Another new show is “We Bare Bears,” about three ursines who make awkward attempts at assimilating into modern society (I haven’t seen a minute of this, so I can’t judge it). The biggest surprise was a Steven Universe/Uncle Grandpa crossover, and I’m still scratching my head as to how this is supposed to work:
UG: “Good morning!”
STEVEN: “AaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAA!!!! Help!”
AMETHYST: “AAAAAAAAWWRRGGHHHH!!!” *kills him*
STEVEN: “Thanks, that was close!”
AMETHYST: “Don’t mention it. Hey, awesome, free pizza!”
*eats Steve*
With the demise of The Hub, Hasbro’s Transformers franchise is coming to CN for its next season. So are the usual Canadian imports: the gazillionth season of Total Drama and something called “Supernoobs”(sounds intelligent already). Pokemon is staying the course in its usual timeslot and probably won’t ever be cancelled unless Japan sinks into the ocean.
There will be a Regular Show movie (not in theaters) and another miniseries, this one set in the Adventure Time world. There will also be “Mighty Magiswords,” which CN describes as a “digital series” and the press release doesn’t clarify what that means. I guess I could ask my friend Kyle, who made the thing.
All signs point to CN’s excellent track record continuing through 2015 and even into 2016. With Nickelodeon perma-jammed into a Spongebob rut and Disney Channel just not caring, I’m grateful one network has continued to defend the right to enjoy good cartoons on television.
