Civil War A “Love Story” According To Russo Brothers
Civil War is shaping up to be one of the most action-packed comic book movies ever. As two squads of heroes will do battle over what they think is right. However, as the Russo Brothers told Empire, at the core of the story is the love two friends share for each other. In this case, that’s Steve and Bucky:
“These are two guys who grew up together, and so they have that same emotional connection to each other as brothers would, and even more so because Bucky was all Steve had growing up.”
Steve has been haunted by Bucky’s return, trying desperately to find him and help him regain his humanity. Now that he’s found him in Civil War, a slew of questions are now arising:
“Is [Bucky] good or is he bad?” Russo said. “Steve has to answer that question for himself, and there are other characters in the movie who hold the opposite point of view. It becomes very explosive. It incites a lot of conflict.”
Sebastian Stan, who plays Bucky/Winter Soldier, sees this less as a love story, but more as one of brotherhood:
“I think it’s easy and generalizing it to say that they’re lovers, when you’re forgetting that one has a lot of guilt because he swore to be the protector of the other, the father figure or older brother so to speak, and then left him behind.” Stan added, “It’s brotherhood to me.”
Captain America: Civil War releases May 6th.
