Disney Infinity Is Coming to an End
The Walt Disney Company is making some changes. Unfortunately, those changes in the future do not involve Disney Infinity. The toys-to-life video game series is officially coming to an end. In short, Disney is no longer going to self-publish video games of its properties. As a result, Disney Interactive and Disney Infinity developer Avalanche Software are shutting down (via Eurogamer). The announcement was made by Disney at a recent earnings report.
According to Disney, Disney Infinity had “lower results” than initially predicted. Disney Infinity SVP and GM John Blackburn recently commented on the issue in a recent blog post. He stated: “By now you may have heard the news that we have made the difficult decision to discontinue production of Disney Infinity. From the beginning, Disney Infinity was built for you—our fans—and I wanted to take a moment to thank you not just for your support over the years, but for creating a community that made Disney Infinity more than just a game.”
He added, “Our goal for Disney Infinity was to bring the best of Disney storytelling to life in homes around the world, and with your support we accomplished that. We hope you had as much fun playing the game as we had making it.”
In terms of Disney Infinity, the final two retail releases for the game will still be released. This includes three new characters from Alice Through the Looking Glass, due out later this month. There will also be a Finding Dory Play Set in June.
More video games will still be made based on Disney properties. However, the company will be licensing its properties out to other video game developers and publishers, similar to the Star Wars franchise and Electronic Arts. Over the course of the live of the series, the games expanded to the Marvel realm of characters and then later Star Wars.
