Dragon Ball Z: Battle of the Gods NA Theatrical Release
Television and film production company, Funimation, announced Friday that it would screen a limited theatrical release of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of the Gods in over 350 North American theaters on August 5, August 6, August 7, and August 9.
Dragon Ball Z: Battle of the Gods is the latest movie in the DBZ franchise and is the first DBZ movie to be released stateside since the release of Dragon Ball Z: Wrath of the Dragon back in September of 2006. However , Battle of the Gods will be the first DBZ film to receive a theatrical release since The Path to Power which was released almost 17 years ago. Currently the film is still in the process of being dubbed in English by Funimation.
“We’re very excited to be bringing Battle of Gods to movie theaters across the country this summer,” said Gen Fukunaga, CEO and President of FUNimation Entertainment. “Dragon Ball Z has always been a huge part of everything we do at FUNimation and, speaking as a fan myself, I can’t wait to watch it on the big screen.”
The film was first released to Japanese fans in March of 2013 and takes place after the events of the television series and the defeat of Majin Buu. According to Funimation, Beerus an ancient god of destruction seeks out Goku after hearing about the defeat of Frieza. Learning that the ancient god is on their home planet the Z-fighters must find a way to stop Beerus before Beerus destroys the earth.
The movie was written and devised by the original author, Akira Toriyama, and will feature an all new Super Saiyan transformation known as “Super Saiyan God.” While the film is a sequel overall to the DBZ franchise longtime fans may notice far greater similarities to the original Dragon Ball franchise and the focus of the film will be far more on comedic character interactions than the high-paced action scenes found in the other DBZ movies.
