George R.R. Martin Does Not Know How Game of Thrones Will End
Just because you’re a writer, doesn’t mean you know everything about your story from the get-go. Especially when your stories are long, sometimes taking several books, movies, episodes, or what have you to tell them. Inspiration can alter the ending, or something you remembered from a previous book can change it as well. George R.R. Martin, the author of Game of Thrones, despite the popularity the series has right now thanks to the series on HBO, admitted to The Observer that he doesn’t have the ending for Game of Thrones (aka A Song of Ice and Fire for the books) written out.
“I haven’t written the ending yet,” Martin said in an interview with the Observer when asked if the ending would be particularly dark. “I’ve said before that the tone of the ending that I’m going for is bittersweet,” he added.
How bittersweet? Well, it’s not exactly clear, but he did cite The Lord of the Rings for an example of the type of feeling he’s going for. “It ends with victory, but it’s a bittersweet victory. Frodo is never whole again, and he goes away to the Undying Lands, and the other people live their lives,” he said. Martin says that’s exactly the sort of tone he’ll be aiming for with the Game of Thrones book series ending.
We’ll just have to wait and see just how the book ends whenever Martin finishes it.
