Gotham Will Have “Comic Accurate” Azrael
One of the big reveals, along with big villains, of Gotham Season 02 in its first half was the Order of St. Dumas, a long standing order in DC Comics. But more than the order itself, is a warrior that is always associated with them: Azrael. Part holy warrior, part insane, Azrael has been both friend and foe to the Bat Family thoughout his history. Early in the season, it was “confirmed” that Azrael would be coming to Gotham, what was unclear was what form he would take.
Well, in an interview with ComicBook.com, it was revealed that Azrael is still coming, and that the Order of St. Dumas is not as dead we’re led to believe:
“They don’t just go away. They stick around!” executive producer John Stephens told ComicBook.com in an interview with a laugh. “They’re very stubborn.”
He went on to note about Azrael himself:
“In many respects, Azrael will have many of the hallmarks and traits that we know from the comics,” he said. “But it will have a brand-new twist upon that character; the way we’re going to bring that character into being on our show will be different than anything we’ve seen in the comics.”
Such changes aren’t uncommon for Gotham, which has already put twists on the Penguin, Riddler, Firefly, Catwoman, and even Bruce Wayne. But Stephens assures us, the moment we see Azrael, we’ll know it’s him:
“It will be identifiable as Azrael in all respects, just a version of him we’ve not seen before, which is the point of doing these! How can we do the character with a fresh twist?”
Gotham, Wrath of the Villains, will arrive February 29th.
