Is Boba Fett Alive or Dead in the Current Star Wars Universe?
Let’s do a recap shall we? Star Wars has been a thing for decades, and long before (and in some ways after) there was ever a talk of a third trilogy, the universe has been constantly growing. Ever since the first trilogy, fans have wanted to know more about the Star Wars universe, and many were happy to supply that.
Whether it was through video games, novels, comics books, or other mediums, the universe expanded in numerous ways, and many fan questions were answered. “What happened after ‘Return of the Jedi’?” “What did happen to the remaining Empire forces?” “Is that REALLY the end of Boba Fett?” And on it goes.
For the latter question, the answer was both simple and epic. Boba Fett actually did make his way out of the Sarlacc Pit. In fact, he actually had numerous chronicled adventures afterwards, including helping train a certain “nerf-herder’s” kid in the ways of combat.
But with the new trilogy, along with recent TV series The Clone Wars and Rebels, continuity needed to be set straight. So, a “story group” was compiled at Lucasfilm to help discern what is real and what is “legend”. A lot of the Expanded Universe stories are now non-canon, including what happened to everyone’s favorite bounty hunter.
That does raise the question, where is Boba Fett? Well during a panel with the Lucasfilm Story Group at Star Wars Celebration 2015, one of the members of the story team Pablo Hidalgo was asked this very question during the panel’s Q&A session (via Slash Film):
“Boba Fett is both simultaneously alive and dead in the Sarlacc Pit until a story pulls him out.”
So in conclusion, Boba Fett’s fate is still up in the air under the revised canon. Notice that Hidalgo doesn’t say he’s going to be there forever. It’s just that a “new” story hasn’t allowed him to be pulled out yet. So there is hope Boba Fett could make a return to the revised canon! We’ll have to hold onto that.
