Joss Whedon Wanted a Daredevil Movie Instead of a TV Show
In the early days of Marvel films, as in before the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the company wasn’t afraid to put some of their lesser known characters at the forefront rather than go to their “established” franchises. First was Blade, which worked well (third movie not included), then came Daredevil, which didn’t work well at all for many fans.
Because of that, it was a worry when Marvel announced that Daredevil would be coming back, but this time via a TV series on Netflix. Thankfully for fans everywhere, the show was fantastic on nearly every single level. But for one man, he really didn’t want a Daredevil TV series, he wanted a Daredevil movie instead. That man was Joss Whedon.
In an interview with IGN, Joss Whedon stated that he fought hard for a new Daredevil film to be made, saying, “I fought for Daredevil to be a film instead of a TV show.”
Now admittedly, he has not seen the show, mainly because it released as he was doing the press tour for Avengers: Age of Ultron. He did note that if the show was doing well, he supports the decision:
“If the show’s working, the show’s working. Comic books are serialized entertainment and a lot of them lend themselves to TV shows as much or more than they do to movies.”
He later relented and noted not only why he felt such love for Daredevil, but why it (and possibly other shows) could work on TV with the tone the character is known for.
“I like him because he’s basically Marvel’s Batman, thanks to Frank Miller basically. So for me I didn’t think they’d be able to sustain that sort of mood on TV but TV has changed so much. It’s come up so much that I think it might just be the right place.”
This is just the latest in a long string of weird things to come from Joss Whedon’s mouth. It’s curious in some ways that this is happening right before Age of Ultron airs. It makes you wonder if all is well in Marvel Land…
