Jurassic World Sequel Will Need New Director If One Occurs
Jurassic World is easily one of the most highly anticipated movies coming this summer. In fact, some speculate the movie will bring in $100+ million in its opening weekend. Despite this hype and early praise, it appears that if a sequel is made, it will not have director and co-writer Colin Trevorrow (via BadTaste.it). Or at least not in the same role as was in for Jurassic World. Trevorrow spoke on the subject during the film’s press tour. He stated:
“Jurassic Park should be a franchise like Star Wars, with several directors capable of giving different footprints. I would remain involved in some way, but not as director.”
It’s interesting that he mentions Star Wars, as that franchise has been both famous and notorious for both switching directors, though George Lucas directed all the films in the Prequel Trilogy. Also, the new sequels and their spinoffs now follow the “new director for each one” style that he is no doubt referencing.
This is a question that many fans struggle to answer. Should a successful movie keep its director? In some cases, the answer is yes, as we saw with the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, and in my opinion The Hobbit Trilogy. Then you have something like the Harry Potter saga that saw different directors for different movies, and it showed. For better or for worse.
I think there is no “right” answer. It’ll truly depend on whether the movie is successful or not. For Jurassic World, we’ll have to wait until next week to see how successful it becomes.
