Microsoft Nearly Called The XBox 360 “The XBox 3”
Microsoft has been mocked for its recent trend of assigning incorrect numbers to its products, and rightly so. They labeled the ninth version of Windows “Windows 10,” they named the third XBox the “XBox One,” and now we’re hearing they wanted to call the second XBox the “XBox 3.”
Why 3? Because, as some have theorized, Microsoft’s employees are just that insecure. The reason they wanted to call it XBox 3 was because Sony was about to come out with the Playstation 3, and if their new XBox was just 2, didn’t that make Sony’s machine look BETTER???
Stop laughing; this is all true. Former Chief Xbox Executive Robbie Bach confirmed it in a recent interview with IGN. “Certainly Xbox 3 was actually on the list because, well, you’ve gotta catch up. You don’t want to be Xbox 2 compared to PlayStation 3. We actually talked about that… You don’t want to feel like you’re a generation behind, so why not skip?”
They ended up altering the name to “360” and the machine went on to great success, overtaking the Playstation 3 in sales. But they didn’t take the lesson to heart. They ended up calling the following console “One,” which left Playstation THREE NUMBERS ABOVE THEM. And Sony is sure winning now!
So….wait. If the 360 was to be called the XBox 3, and the current model is called the XBox One, does that make the original model the XBox 2?
