Oculus Rift pricing revealed by CEO
The CEO of Oculus, Brendan Iribe, has revealed that the “all-in” price for the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset will be in the region of $1,500. Although that price seems incredibly high, Iribe explained that that price would include the cost of other hardware, including a brand new computer if the owner didn’t already have one capable of using the VR headset.
Considering that the specifications for computers will be rather high in order to use the consumer version of Oculus Rift, including 8GB+ RAM, an Intel i5-4590 or higher processor and a graphics card that is at least equivalent to a Nvidia GTX 970 or AMD 290. This means that a brand new computer capable of using the headset would cost between $1000-$1200, thus giving it a stand-alone price of around $300.
The CEO went on to say that he believed that the “all-in” would fall to $1000 in the coming years, possibly due to a combination of falling system specs for the headset, cheaper hardware and a fall in cost for computer equipment.
Earlier in the month Oculus revealed that they would not be releasing the retail version of the Oculus Rift until 2016, despite earlier reports that it would hit store shelves at some point in 2015. Devkits have been available for developers for several years, with the latest version having released to backers at the beginning of the year.
