Phil Spencer Reiterates Microsoft’s Focus On PC Gaming
Last week Phil Spencer revealed that (via PC Gamer) Microsoft would be joining the PC Gaming Show at E3, an event at the upcoming expo that will focus on developments in video games outside of consoles. He suggested that Microsoft was serious about its stated desire to integrate Xbox into Windows 10 and show more love to PC gamers than they have over the past few years. Many who prefer to play on PC have felt let down by Microsoft in the past decade, especially in regards to the release of Games For Windows Live that simply causes more problems and was discontinued in 2014.
Spencer has since confirmed this sentiment in a range of interviews, talking about how Windows is the most popular platform for gaming in the world and that Microsoft needs to capitalize on that and show more support to developers and publishers.
“We weren’t fully committed as a company, and I’ve said that before. We made commitments to developers and consumers that I don’t feel we lived up to. The key difference now is that the Xbox team is driving the Windows and console gaming efforts as one connected ecosystem.”
“I can tell you definitively that our team has never committed more resources to making Windows better for game developers and gamers, and that means any gamer on Windows 10, regardless of storefront or device,”
“You can absolutely count on us to invest in games for the PC. While we want to break down the walls between platforms, we also know that certain games are optimized for certain devices.”
Phil Spencer took over as head of Xbox in 2014 and quickly admitted that Microsoft had made mistakes with the Xbox One and gaming in general. He committed to a shift in focus for the console, emphasizing gaming above all other entertainment features. Spencer has also spoke about a desire to invest more in first-party games for both the PC and Xbox One, and with Microsoft having a number of key franchises, such as Halo, Gears of War, Fable and Forza, they could certainly be very attractive to gamers.
