In a Reading Slump? Fret Not, Wattpad’s Got You Covered
Look, your eyes have been deceiving you. Believe it or not, Wattpad isn’t just jam-packed with Justin Bieber and One Direction fan-fiction. It is so much more than that. Some of the Wattpad stories are so popular that there are movies based on them. Go get your tablet, find a comfy couch, grab a mug of hot chocolate and start reading away!
Mulan isn’t just a Disney princess. She’s a legend. Fearless is a Mulan retelling so, you know where this is going, right? Iris Gwenneth has been through a lot. When she finds out their country is embroiled in a battle and that one man from every family is forced to join the army, she decides to take her father’s place as she’s afraid of losing the only person she has left in life. Like Mulan, this story teaches us the importance of friendship and sacrifice. To quote from the book blurb, “if one masquerades as a soldier for too long… That person might just become one.” Fearless has been well-received so far, so popular in fact that the author is writing a sequel!
Normally, I would be so cheesed off when someone recommends chick lit to me. I’ve had several bad experiences reading (and watching) them and my issue with them is usually the same: whiny and unlikeable characters, paper-thin plot, you name it. Had it not been Mila Kunis on the cover, I probably would not have added this book to my Wattpad reading list. All I’ve Never Wanted tells the story of an ordinary girl and the Scions, the four most powerful and intimidating guys at the prestigious Valesca Academy. Unlike the rest of girls in school, Maya Lindberg is not impressed with the four gentlemen. All she wants is to avoid them until graduation and get out from this hellhole. However, things start to take a turn for the (or not?) worst when she goes to a party and accidentally spills a drink on one of them. There are two things that draw me to this book: colorful writing and a strong female protagonist. Somehow, the writer has effortlessly managed to transform a corny plot into a stunning achievement. There is a tinge of suspense in All I’ve Never Wanted, making it a canon-worthy read.
The author of Frost has done something right, otherwise, it would not have garnered over 8 million reads. First things first, the opening line is gold: “I froze the first boy I ever kissed. And I don’t mean he got cold feet…” It sure brings to mind Rogue from the X-Men franchise. And wait… it looks like Elsa? If you take a look at the cover, it gives the impression that Frost is a re-telling of the Disney animated movie Frozen. It’s (obviously) not. Actually, now that I think about it, the girl on the book cover kind of looks like Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones, too. That’s another story for another day. Frost, the first book in the Jotun Chronicles series, introduces us to Megan who finds herself caught up in an intense ancient battle between two kingdoms. Not only that, she also “discovers that she possesses a growing power that’s becoming more and more difficult to control.”
Never underestimate a desperate person. You know a story’s good when it wins an award. The Gauntlet, written by Jamie Harris a.k.a words_are_weapons, won the Wattpad Prize for Best Epic in 2014. The Wattpad Prize udged by the most dedicated and active Wattpad readers. Our protagonist goes by the name of Codi James, an orphan and underachiever whose life is going nowhere. After causing chaos in her school, she is sent to the Brax-Delta training academy to compete as a champion in the Gauntlet Tournament. If you have a thing for science fiction and adventure, this is not to be missed. Are you a Wattpad user? If so, who are your favorite Wattpad authors?
