Reasoning Behind Magneto Joining Apocalypse Given For Upcoming X-Men Movie
One of the main differences between comic books and comic book movies is the ability to do certain things with certain characters in certain situations, and then relay them in a certain amount of time. Movies always have a constant state of motion, even when sequels are a given, cause eventually the movie will end. Whereas, for a comic book, the arc can go on for a while without break or hesitation.
In the X-Men movie universe, a big villain is finally making his big screen debut in the form of Apocalypse. Just like the comics, he’s getting four horsemen to answer his beck and call. However, a surprise was that Magneto was going to be one of his horsemen. Something that has not (to my knowledge) been done before. In fact, Magneto has been one mutant who usually always stands against Magneto. So, when IGN got to chat with Michael Fassbender about why his Magneto is joining Apocalypse, a very interesting answer was given. Mainly, in that though Apocalypse is very much like a Nazi, Magneto won’t care when his time comes in the movie:
“I think that’s the classic thing of any sort of megalomaniac, there are huge contradictions and hypocrisies within it,” Fassbender said. “It’s almost like sometimes the worst dictators start off as complete idealists, and that almost makes them more extreme in their dictatorship later. So absolutely, what Apocalypse is doing is echoing that. For him at that point, it’s just about, ‘Okay, I’m gonna bring as much pain to the human race as they’ve brought me and,’ basically, ‘wipe them out once and for all.’ In a way, it’s a extremer, more effective version of how we’ve seen him in the past. It’s definitely the most extreme version of that. I think he’s come to a point where he’s been pushed to that place where he doesn’t care anymore. He’s kind of dead inside.”
Fassbender notes how when the movie starts he’s living a simple life with a family, then apparently something bad happens and Apocalypse then recruits him. How bad will it get? Where will Magneto end up at the end of X-Men: Apocalypse? We’ll find out when the movie comes to theaters May 27th, 2016.
