Russo Brothers Considered Red Hulk For Civil War
Part of the appeal of Captain America: Civil War, for both the comic and the movie is the thought and idea of having numerous heroes together in one place duking it out. For the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this had to be a little more focused, but as the Russo Brothers revealed to ComicBook.Com, there were always a lot of heroes they wanted to bring in. They wanted Spider-Man from the beginning, and they got him, they wanted Wasp too, but they decided to hold back on her. Another they wanted at first, but then decided against, was Red Hulk, AKA the returning Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross.
“We had so many characters in that movie as it was,” Joe Russo tells ComicBook.com. “We consider everything, obviously, but with so many characters in that movie as it was to try and entertain adding another character and to get to the Red Hulk, you have to add a back story. You have to substantiate the narrative to get to that. [Thaddeus Ross], on our list of priorities, he was there sort of as the government’s agenda and not to add another complicated super powered character to the mix.”
Though the Russo’s acknowledged Red Hulk could appear later, he likely wouldn’t have fit in the very crowded film that was Civil War in the context he would’ve needed to be in. This went for other characters too:
“We had a board when we started this process of the movies with these Avengers characters that have ever graced the screen in a Marvel film and a list of characters that we have at our disposal that haven’t graced the screen,” Joe Russo explains. “We spent the last six to eight months crafting stories around the cornucopia of characters at our disposal so anything is possible.”
Captain America: Civil War comes to DVD/Blu-Ray September 13th.
