Scott Snyder Says He “Didn’t Change” Superman
Man of Steel was the true start of the DC Movie universe, and yet, despite doing very well at the box office, and getting good reviews, there are many fans who believe that director Scott Snyder changed Superman in his film. Mainly, in the killing of Zod at the end of the movie, a scene which still is talked about to this day.
In a recent podcast, the Hall of Justice, Snyder noted that for those who know the true Superman, the one in the comics, not the TV shows or films, know he didn’t change Superman:
“People are always like ‘You changed Superman.’ If you’re a comic book fan, you know that I didn’t change Superman. If you know the true canon, you know that I didn’t change Superman. If you’re a fan of the old movies, yeah, I changed him a bit,” Snyder said. He went on to clarify that he, as a comic book fan, defaulted to Superman’s comic origins and not his on-screen incarnation, aiming to have his Superman “set a tone for the world” and “feel consistent for the DC universe.”
“My point is that we don’t take liberties [from the characters’ comic origins]…what we’ve done is create a place where they can really be the mythological characters as designed in the comic books,” Snyder added.
In case you are unaware, Superman in the comics is not above killing, he has had to do so in the past, sometimes even doing torture in order to protect the people of Earth. But, because of the limitations of movies and TV shows, that sometimes can’t be conveyed, hence, the image that Superman won’t kill, which as Snyder accurately proves, isn’t correct. It’s rare, but he has done it.
Batman v Superman opens in theaters March 25th.
