Star Trek Beyond Trailer Debuts Online
Paramount Pictures surprised the entire world today with the release of the first trailer for the next installment in the Star Trek film franchise, Star Trek Beyond. You can check out the full trailer for the sequel in the player below.
Well, if you thought that Star Trek Beyond was going to take the franchise back to a more traditional Star Trek style route, that doesn’t appear to be the case from a trailer. The soundtrack for the trailer features “Sabotage” by the Beastie Boys, which was used in 2009 Star Trek reboot directed by J.J. Abrams. The new sequel comes from director Justin Lin, who has found great success with The Fast and the Furious movie franchise. Well, this trailer almost looks like Fast and the Furious meets Star Trek. I am not saying making Star Trek super-action-packed is a bad thing, but it will probably continue to peeve the more traditional and purist fans of Star Trek.
From the looks of things, the Starfleet Enterprise is either crash landed or maybe destroyed. Captain James T. Kirk and his crew look like they are stranded on a hostile alien planet and have to fight their way out. That’s only a rough assumption of the story based off the trailer. There is also quite a bit of focus and attention on Sofia Boutella’s new character in the film. However, while there is some voice-over dialogue from the character, there doesn’t appear to be a single shot of the new villain for Star Trek Beyond, played by Idris Elba. He can be heard saying, “This is where it begins, Captain. This is where the frontier pushes back.”
Star Trek Beyond stars Chris Pine, Idris Elba, Simon Pegg, Zach Quinto, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Anton Yelchin and Karl Urban. The film arrives in theaters on July 22, 2016. That’s just in time to coincide with the franchise’s 50th anniversary.
