Steven DeKnight Says Daredevil Will Finally Use the ‘Marvel Version’ of The Punisher
Fans are looking forward to Daredevil Season 2 for many reasons, chief among them is the addition of The Punisher played by Jon Bernthal. Former Showrunner Stephen S. DeKnight spoke to Slash Film at the TCA summer press tour to talk about the show and what Punisher in the series. DeKnight noted that they actually had talked about bringing in Punisher before he had to exit the series due to other commitments, and he made a very interesting statement about the character and how he has been portrayed before in the movies.
“The thing about The Punisher, and I think there are great things about each of those versions, but none of them was completely the Marvel version,” DeKnight said. He added: “And none of those movies were under the Marvel Studios banner until they recently got The Punisher back. So this is really the first time that we’re seeing the Marvel Studios from the Iron Man days, when they can control their own product, actually do this character.”
He also noted his regret about having to leave before bringing in Punisher, but notes he knows its in good hands:
“Punisher is one of my favorite characters,” DeKnight said. “I’ve talked to Jeph Loeb ever since I first met him back on Buffy about doing The Punisher. So it was a heartbreak to me to have to leave, but I knew it was in good hands and I loved everything we had started talking about about Frank Castle being in that story.”
Daredevil Season 2 is slated to debut on Netflix some time next year.
