Steven Spielberg Believes Superhero Movies Will Die Out Like Westerns
It’s a fact that in all forms of entertainment, movements change what kind of shows and films get made. Look at every decade and you’ll see that trend, even if its subtle.
Needless to say, our current decade is spearheaded by the superhero genre, which is dominating both films and television. With two major companies (with a third on the way) vying for your money and attention with their superhero properties, some believe this will never end…
And then there’s Steven Spielberg, who sees a different trend when it comes to the genre. For he told the Associated Press that he doesn’t believe the movie part of this formula will last:
“We were around when the Western died and there will be a time when the superhero movie goes the way of the Western,” Spielberg said. “It doesn’t mean there won’t be another occasion where the Western comes back and the superhero movie someday returns.”
He does note though that it probably will be fine for a while longer:
“Of course, right now the superhero movie is alive and thriving,” he told the AP. “I’m only saying that these cycles have a finite time in popular culture. There will come a day when the mythological stories are supplanted by some other genre that possibly some young filmmaker is just thinking about discovering for all of us.”
