For those who missed this weekend’s final Jodie Whittaker episode of Doctor Who, you only need to know two things: One, it was a total mess, and Two, the episode ended with Whittaker regenerating into…David Tennant, the Tenth Doctor. Again. Weren’t we promised a completely different Doctor (and a Black one this time)? What gives? For the answers we’re going to have to wait an entire year until Doc Who returns with three TV specials in November 2023. Here’s the twist, though — they won’t appear on BBC America. England’s most popular and longest-running sci-fi series is instead moving to Disney+, and new episodes will be exclusive to that streamer. This development robs BBC America of its main purpose for existing, though every other cable channel could say “join the club.” Disney did not outright buy Doctor Who (though it would be in character for them). BBC announced today their hit spy comedy-drama Killing Eve will run until at least 2021. The second season was simulcast on both BBC America and AMC last spring; both networks will run Season 3 soon. “How could we not have massive confidence in Killing Eve?” said Sarah Barnett, president of AMC Networks Entertainment Group and AMC Studios. “It has won big in every major award show and is the highest-growing show on U.S. television for six years. Our addicted fans will not be disappointed.” I don’t believe we’ve discussed Killing Eve on Popgeeks before, but if we haven’t, we really should start. Developer Maze Theory revealed their upcoming Doctor Who-themed VR game, The Edge Of Time, last month at E3. Now they’ve brought us a more in-depth look at the game….specifically, the creatures you’ll be running into while playing it. The Weeping Angels (video 1) are most suited to a VR game, as their mechanic would be the most terrifying in first-person view. Their appearance as stone statues is only an illusion. Yes, you saw and read that right, the 13th Doctor, the one who will replace Peter Capaldi after the Christmas Special this year is indeed a woman, a woman named Jodie Whittaker. If you don’t know her, she’s a famous British actress who has been in shows and films aplenty. Including fan-favorites like The Black Mirror, Broadchurch, and Attack The Block. It’s been a question for a long time as to whether Doctor Who would ever be female. During the Capaldi run, the issue was magnified when The Master became The Mistress. And then, when the Doctor returned to Gallifrey, we saw one of the High Council regenerate from a man to a woman in front of our eyes. It’s a sad, yet not unexpected, day for Whovians. As today, BBC confirmed that Peter Capaldi will indeed leave the role of Doctor Who after its tenth season/series and the 2017 Christmas special. Which ironically, is where he was born as The Doctor a few years back. Why isn’t this unexpected? Well, Matt Smith only went 3 seasons/series as the Doctor, and with Stephen Moffat stepping down as the showrunner, it’s only fair that the new showrunner get to pick a Doctor for his new vision on the show. Sherlock is a little under 48 hours away from its long awaited season 04 premiere on BBC and BBC America. It’s a curious time in the Doctor Who Universe. Due to the Olympics, among other things, the tenth season of the show isn’t arriving until Spring. Thus, the only new episode of the series that’s coming this year is the annual Christmas special that aired today. Which won’t technically tie into the new season. However, this hasn’t stopped BBC from releasing a new trailer to show off what’s coming. Including the arrival of new companion Pearl Mackie. This trailer is very much the world of Doctor Who through her eyes, as we see many standard questions being asked as she’s brought along for the ride. The real question here, is how will the season end? With Jenna Coleman’s character gone, Gallifrey found, and old storylines more-or-less finished, there’s a lot of potential for new stories and such. The found-footage genre is a staple of modern horror, for better or for worse. It isn’t always used effectively, but when it works, it’s because the “real” quality of the amateur-looking footage does a better job at fooling your mind. Most people think the first successful use of this trick was The Blair Witch Project, but as Mental Floss reports, the lads across the sea beat US filmmakers to the camcorder seven years prior. Screenwriter Stephen Volk had an idea for a TV series that was half-horror, half television satire. The program (or “programme”) would follow a fictional ghost-hunting crew in a “real” documentary format, much like the lame ghost-chasing reality shows that run today on channels you don’t watch. In the last episode, this team would encounter a real ghost and the tone of the show would shift suddenly into outright horror.
