IDW Announces Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 40th Anniversary Comics Celebration
Ack! The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have been around for forty years?? It’s true — if you go back to the VERY beginning. The whole thing started in 1984 as an independent comic book launched by creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. At the time, it was a half-parody of trends in the comics business: teenagers, mutants and ninjas were all popular, as was Frank Miller’s run in Daredevil, which introduced ninjas called the Hand and a sensei called Stick. So the Turtles fought ninjas called the Foot and had a sensei called Splinter (get it?) It went beyond just a joke and became its own thing — and then some. TMNT has taken many forms across a lot of media, but it’s managed to endure in its original comic book form since the beginning. Now IDW, the current holders of the license, are about to celebrate four decades of Turtles litrerature with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 40th Anniversary Comics Celebration.
