T’Challa, King of Wakanda, may be dead in the MCU, but he will live on in the world of video games. Electronic Arts just announced today that a Black Panther video game is now in development. This will be a full-fledged Triple A production so huge, EA is creating a new studio just to make it. Cliffhanger Games is the name of the studio, and Black Panther will be its first project for EA. Based in Seattle, the team will be helmed by Kevin Stephens, formerly the boss of Monolith Productions. “We’re dedicated to delivering fans a definitive and authentic Black Panther experience, giving them more agency and control over their narrative than they have ever experienced in a story-driven video game,” Stephens said. “Wakanda is a rich Super Hero sandbox, and our mission is to develop an epic world for players who love Black Panther and want to explore the world of Wakanda as much as we do.” EA entered a partnership with Marvel to produce three games —

There are several competing PC video game storefronts out there, but Steam commands the lion’s share of attention, purely through the inertia of being the one most relied on. There’s also GMG, Humble, and the Epic Games Store, plus the e-markets built into your computer like the Microsoft Store and iOS. At the bottom of the list is Origin, the storefront from Electronic Arts, which consumers only use begrudgingly when one of EA’s own games forces them to. Bioware’s Anthem is one of the most ambitious video games that will be released this winter — in the works since 2012, the game is an MMO where players form teams of armored “Freelancers” with a mission to explore the area surrounding their colony. It’s the wish of Bioware — and their parent company EA — that Anthem turns into their next big franchise. They already have a plan ready to go if that happens, stretching out ten years. Bioware wants you to play Anthem so badly that they’ve produced a trailer enticing you to play it before its official release. The Anthem VIP Demo will be the earliest version of Anthem released to the public. There are two ways to gain access to it: pre-order the game, or subscribe for at least one month to EA’s Steam wannabe, Origin. There IS a third way: be buddies with someone who paid for either of those things. Each VIP Demo player will be given three passes to give to their friends.

With EA basically owning the rights to make Star Wars games, the pressure is on them to make each one unique, while also not bogging down the franchise, which happened in a previous decade. However, EA is confident, and talked about their vision for the games and the Star Wars universe: “Star Wars is a huge franchise, probably the biggest, and because it’s a universe it also has a huge scope of different types of characters, different types of player fantasies that you can have within that [universe],” Jade Raymond said in an interview with IGN. It looks like Star Wars Battlefront fans have something to get excited about this week. The official EA Star Wars Battlefront Twitter account posted that a big announcement is coming tomorrow. The image with the tweet features a picture of Luke Skywalker and Han Solo together on Hoth. The caption reads, “Prepare for a cold front coming through Star Wars Battlefront tomorrow…” You can check out the tweets below. Gamespot.com is speculating that the announcement could be released to the game’s January 2016 update. Another tweet by the EA Battlefront team to a fan said that more details on the Battlefront Season Pass and more DLC will be coming soon. Electronic Arts officially announced a new membership service for PC gamers that will be available on Origin called Origin Access. The new service officially went live today, and it will be hitting other regions soon. PC users will now be able to get Origin Access in the US, Canada, the UK and Germany. The service is available for $4.99USD/€3.99/£3.99GBP a month, and will offer players access to a collection of PC games. Currently the service only has 15 games available, including Battlefield 4, Dragon Age: Inquisition, The Sims 3 and This War of Mine. Star Wars Battlefront Has Sold 13 Million Copies

Despite some disappointing reviews, it appears that Star Wars Battlefront has become an overall strong seller for Electronic Arts. Speaking to Fortune, Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter expressed his belief that the reboot of the Battlefront franchise has sold between 12-13 million copies worldwide. Another analyst estimated the game sold as many as 13 million copies. Pachter’s analysis came up with a figure of six million copies of the game sold across the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Windows PC platforms in November and another six million copies in December. Going by the average retail price of $55 for the game, based on discounts for the game since launch, Pachter estimated that the game has already generated about $660 million in revenue. Evan Wilson, an analyst for Pacific Crest Securities, came up with a figure of 13 million units sold for Star Wars Battlefront thus far. Electronic Arts and Coldwood Interactive officially announced today that the new puzzle and platform game, Unravel, has received an official release date. The new game is scheduled for a digital release in February 2016 for Origin for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. EA has made it clear in the past that they haven’t really catered to the open-world genre in the same way that some of their rivals have. Instead, they have focused on titles that involve large multiplayer experiences, making popular franchises such as FIFA, Madden, Battlefield and Dead Space. While they have had open-world games, these have generally been RPG titles from BioWare. Meanwhile, publishers such as Ubisoft have dove into open-world games completely, creating titles such as Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry and Watch Dogs. In fact, some of the biggest games of recent times have been in this genre, from Batman: Arkham Knight to Grand Theft Auto V and yet EA has been unable to come with its own idea. One of the recent trends that’s been happening in games are HD remakes of older titles. Whether it be old-school classics like Grim Fandango, or more modern pieces that just want new life like Windwaker HD, it has proven very popular amongst many publishers.
