To say the Fantastic Four haven’t had much luck at the box office is putting it mildly — there have been three attempts so far at translating Marvel’s First Family to screen, the first of them so cheap and rushed that it entered bad movie infamy and its existence eventually became a plot point on Arrested Development. But now that Disney solidly owns the property, they can establish some quality control and push out the first non-embarrassing F4 adaption in history. Today they announced all the roles have been cast, and they’re all people from your favorite shows and movies! Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian, The Last Of Us) will lead charge as Reed, Vanessa Kirby (Mission Impossible: Fallout) has been cast as Sue, Joseph Quinn (Stranger Things) is Johnny, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Bear) will play The Thing. It’s not always a good idea to announce a release schedule that stretches out for years. The more you promise, the harder it is to commit, and you have no real way of knowing the future. It was only a few months ago that Disney unloaded a massive Marvel Movie release plan that stretched through much of the coming decade, and now for unexplained reasons they’re revising those plans. Most of these movies weren’t due out in a while, but that “while” is now further back. The first is Blade, which moves from a planned November 3, 2023 release date to September 6, 2024 (almost a full year, yikes). Deadpool 3 had the September 6 slot, but now the Merc will return two months later on November 8, 2024. Long before the Marvel Cinematic Universe happened, superhero movies were anything but a sure thing. Knowing this, Marvel decided to sell rights of certain characters to certain studios. This is how we got the Blade Trilogy, Spider-Man quintet, the X-Men Saga, Daredevil, Ghost Rider, and of course, the Fantastic Four films. However, unlike many of those films, the Fantastic Four has suffered the most because of the rights not being with Marvel. So much so that Marvel cancelled the ongoing comic, which was the longest running comic in the Marvel comics franchise. The Bill Simmons Podcast recently interviewed actor and star of Creed and Fantastic Four, Michael B. Jordan. As we get farther and farther away from the flop of the recent reboot of Fantastic Four, more and more people are coming to terms with how bad it was, including those who acted in the film. Toby Kebbell, who played Doctor Doom in the film, talked with IGN and discussed strongly about how he felt about the film. “I was disappointed, but the fans aren’t wrong. Though Simon Kinberg has many successful products under his belt, including the revitalized X-Men franchise, he did serve as the producer of the reboot of Fantastic Four, which failed horribly. The Hollywood Reporter talked to him about this, and asked him about his loyalty to the film given his numerous projects. On his work for the film, Kinberg stated, “I was there every day on set of Fan Four, as I am on anything that I’m the writer and the producer of. Some movies work out and some don’t. Ok, so it’s been official for a while, but the recent Fantastic Four film is a major flop. It’s been in theaters for over a month and has only grossed $55 million domestically. For comparison, Ant-Man did $60 million its first weekend. It’s hard to think of the recent Fantastic Four movie as anything but a failure. In reviews, revenue, and reception, the film has been an unmitigated failure. Chronicle writer Max Landis at one point had a different pitch of Fantastic Four to Fox, and he even wrote 50 pages of the script before Fox said they were going in a different direction. The fallout from the less than expected premiere of the Fantastic Four reboot is still underway. In case you didn’t hear, Fantastic Four only made $25.7 million dollars when it opened at the box office this weekend. This is a huge blow to 20th Century Fox in many ways. This was its chance to have two high-grossing Marvel properties going on at the same time. If that had happened, a rumored crossover between the two would’ve made for potentially even more revenue. With this low result, that seems even more unlikely now than it did before. Further adding to this is the fact that per The Hollywood Reporter, at best, Fox could lose upwards of $60 million dollars due to this disappointing opening. The film was made for $120 million dollars, and that’s not including the tens of millions spent marketing it over the last few months to try and make this a hit. After basically a year of bad vibes, controversial news, and fear of the worst, the worst has indeed come to pass for 20th Century Fox’s cinematic Fantastic Four reboot. Following numerous bad reviews, with the best saying it was mediocre at best, Fantastic Four has failed at the box office, only grossing $26.2 million dollars over the weekend. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film came in only second place behind Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. Now making over $26 million dollars at the box office isn’t always failure, but it is when you consider certain things. For example, the movie was made for roughly $120 million dollars, and that’s not including the massive marketing campaign. It looks unlikely that it’ll make that back. Furthermore, the original Fantastic Four movie from roughly a decade back, made $56 million in its first weekend, and that movie had some bad reviews as well, though, not as bad as the new film.
