Rockstar said they’d release the GTA VI trailer tomorrow, December 5. But then a leak happened today and the company was like “screw it, here it is officially.” Behold: for the first time ever, this is what a Grand Theft Auto made with modern technology can look like: I’d imagine Rockstar is fed up with leaks by this point; we knew about the Vice City setting and the dual protagonists from the previous big leak last year. They know how to make an impressive trailer though and if you think you’ve seen this game, you really haven’t. The soft pastels bring to mind the 80s-set Vice City from 2002, still the favorite GTA of many. This area has of course been updated for modern times with streaming phone videos, twerking, screeching Karens and alligators popping up in all sorts of places. GTA V has served as the “newest” Grand Theft Auto for a full decade now. Putting that in perspective, when it came out Obama was not only still president, he had a good three years left to serve. On the day of its release, it was possible to rent it from Blockbuster in some locations. What happened and how did we get here? What happened was Rockstar Games found a way to turn GTA V into a perpetual money-making machine. GTA Online was introduced not long after the GTA V base game, and by charging fees and keeping it steadily updated, the financial need for a new game was eliminated. So they didn’t start work on GTA 6 — they just kept re-releasing GTA V. It now exists across three generations of game consoles and, more by consequence than anything, ranks as one of the biggest-selling video games ever. Grand Theft Auto 5 was released in 2013. That was seven years ago, so surely we should be hearing something about GTA6 very soon, right? Think again. According to a new report from industry watchdog Jason Schreier, pre-production has only just begun on the next Grand Theft Auto game. “Rockstar’s next big project is still early in development,” Schreier reports. The intervening years have mostly been spent creating Red Dead Redemption 2 and its DLC. Even with all that time, AND multiple delays, Rockstar had to resort to massive crunch to finish RDR2 (a fact Jason exposed). What this points to is the current state of the AAA industry: a company of Rockstar’s size can only make one game at a time, it takes at least five years to make that singular game, and it can’t even make that singular game in all that time without a ridiculously tight schedule and overworked staff. A New York state court has today thrown out a lawsuit by Lindsay Lohan and Karen Gravano, who were attempting to sue Take-Two as they believed that their likenesses had been used without their permission in Grand Theft Auto V. According to the five-judge panel who were overseeing the legal action, the case was dismissed because it was a work of fiction and was covered by First Amendment protection in addition to the fact that their actual names and real-life likenesses were never seen in the game. The ruling states, “this video game’s unique story, characters, dialogue, and environment, combined with the player’s ability to choose how to proceed in the game, render it a work of fiction and satire” meaning that is protected from such lawsuits. Lohan originally sued Take-Two claiming that a character, called Lacey Jonas in GTA V, was based on her. She cited the fact that the character was anorexic and needed help to avoid paparazzi photographers as evidence that the game was violating her right

GTA Online has launched a new mode in celebration Valentine’s Day. In true GTA form though, it’s not your typical affair, it’s one perfectly suited to the game. Called, “Til Death Do Us Part”, this new Adversary Mode puts teams of couples together and puts them against three other couples in a fight to the finish. The full details can be seen below as noted on the official site: “Till Death Do Us Part – a brand new GTA Online Adversary Mode – is now available to play. Up to four pairs of star-crossed lovers take part in the ultimate GTA Online quadruple date: each couple has one life between them, and if one half dies, the survivor then takes their own life in dramatic fashion. The UK based public broadcasting company BBC is set to release a drama focusing on the development of the hugely successful series Grand Theft Auto. The announcement was made as part of the BBC’s new major initiative Make It Digital, which aims to get people interested in coding and digital creation. While no firm broadcast date has been revealed it is likely that it will be shown on BBC Two in the fall, when the Make It Digital initiative officially launches. According to engadget, the making-of drama will be a one-off feature length drama that will run for 90 minutes (that’s without any commercials). The broadcaster has not yet given out any details of whether it will see the light of day in other countries, although the BBC do have a commercial arm in the form of BBC Worldwide and a US channel called BBC America so it’s safe to assume that it will eventually make its way to other markets. Due to the Playstation Network and XBox Live DDOS attack over the Christmas holiday, most gamers did not have the capability to enjoy seasonally-timed events in online games. This has now been corrected. Two weeks ago Grand Theft Auto Online introduced a surprise update that added seasonally themed items to the game: snow, Santa hats, festive masks, ugly sweaters, even the ability to have snowball fights in the streets. It would have been a blast if anyone were there to enjoy it on Christmas morning. These special events were originally to be removed January 5, but will now remain in the game for an unspecified period of time. (They WILL be removed eventually, so even if it feels a bit awkward on December 29, get your Yule on now.) GTA isn’t the only game to be affected by the outage. Destiny has the mysterious traveling merchant Xur, a character that only shows up on weekends and will trade the player common items in the game for rare and exotic weaponry.

GTA Online Heists Arrive Early 2015 It has been a long wait for many, with huge anticipation and expectation, but Rockstar Games have today revealed the official trailer for GTA Online Heists. GTA V Next Gen Additions Detailed Rockstar Games have finally broken their silence to detail additions to the next generation of their hugely successful Grand Theft Auto V. In a post on the official PlayStation Blog, Rockstar detailed some of the new activities, vehicles and other additions exclusive to the next generations versions of GTA V (XBox One and PC included, as confirmed in a Rockstar Q&A), due for release next month. The additions will be free to anyone upgrading their existing GTA V save only – from PS3 or Xbox 360, but only to those upgrading – anyone entering Los Santos for the first time will likely be able to access the new content at a later date or via an in-game unlock/purchase.
