The Netflix Marvel Shows Are Now Headed For Disney+

Disney formally announced today the shows Marvel produced in association with Netflix last decade — Daredevil, Jessica Jones, The Defenders, Iron Fist, The Punisher, and Luke Cage — will be given a new home soon. The contract with Netflix expired recently, allowing cameos from its characters to show up in other projects, but it also meant the ejection of said shows from Netflix itself. The new neighborhood won’t be Hulu, but Disney+. In addition, Marvel’s Agents Of SHIELD will be added on the same day. It may not sound surprising to some, but for those who know how Disney operates, it’s a bit unexpected. The Netflix Marvel shows were all rated TV-MA with adult content. Up to this point, Disney has not allowed any movie or TV series with R or TV-MA content on Disney+. Usually, the company offloads those things to Hulu, a streamer it has a majority stake in. Hulu has a more adult audience so it makes more sense to make movies like Deadpool available there instead

The Marvel / Netflix partnership is well and truly dead, and this proves it beyond a shadow of a doubt: all the props and items that were used in the shows are now being sold off. Marvel has announced an auction, taking place in June, that will include items mainly used in The Punisher and The Defenders, though stuff from other shows will be represented. Unfortunately, this is actually the third auction and we weren’t tipped off to the previous two. The second auction was the Jessica Jones one and that means we’ll never own Jessica’s Third Rate Joan Jett Wannabe Jacket, or Jeri’s bottle of suicide pills. The most coveted item in the vault, Daredevil’s suit, has already been sold….but you couldn’t afford it anyway, as it went for a whopping $55,000. Some shocking news came out of Netflix today: they’re pulling the plug on Iron Fist after just two seasons. “Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is proud of the series and grateful for all of the hard work from our incredible cast, crew and showrunners,” states Marvel and Netflix in a joint statement. “We’re thankful to the fans who have watched these two seasons, and for the partnership we’ve shared on this series. While the series on Netflix has ended, the immortal Iron Fist will live on.” If Iron Fist had been its own property, the news wouldn’t be quite as stunning — this show was the most critically disliked and mocked of all the Netflix Marvel shows — but it’s what the move represents that makes the real impact. Fans of Misty in the comics have been waiting for this for a long time ever since her first appearance, because in the comics, Misty has a rad bionic arm. Misty’s arm, a gift from Tony Stark, can do all sorts of things: hack robots, lift 100-pound slabs of concrete, and even create energy blasts and gravity shields. From the moment Defenders was announced, fans were hyped. Especially since it would bring together four very popular Marvel characters together for the first time under this team name. Daredevil got the party started, Jessica Jones kept it rolling, Luke Cage get the momentum going…but…then Iron Fist kind of stumbled. Leaving many to wonder if Defenders would be more like the first three, or the last one. The answer? It’s good, really good. Not perfect, but still good. WARNING!!!! FULL SPOILERS AHEAD!!! When you talk about the Marvel/Netflix collaborations, Iron Fist will be brought up. Easily the most polarizing of the collaborations, fans hated not only the portrayal of Danny Rand as Iron Fist, but also how the fights were incredibly lackluster. When the Netflix/Marvel collaborations began, we were told from the outset that this would be a dark take on these characters. And sure enough, between Daredevil (and his numerous bloody fights and kills), Jessica Jones (and her…uh…scenes with Luke Cage in a bedroom) and Luke Cage (violence, implied discretions) and so far, we got that. But when Iron Fist came around, fans were put off by how light and bubbly Danny Rand was. He was very childish, and he showed very little growth throughout the series in many fans eyes. While at the TCA’s, showrunner for Season 01 Scott Buck revealed to IGN that he wanted Danny Rand to be “always going to see the good side of things and always going to be an optimist.” Even going so far as that he didn’t want him to be a dark character like the other three Defenders. “But do you really want four dark, brooding Defenders?…We created him to fit into that world and be a counterpoint to some of the others,”

It was confirmed yesterday at San Diego Comic Con that Iron Fist, the fourth series in the Marvel/Netflix collaboration would be getting a second season. This decision has already been met with a lot of dismay from fans, as many note that Iron Fist was the worst of the Netflix/Marvel shows. But now, we know that the second season will get a new showrunner in the form of Raven Metzner. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because he was the writer of the Elektra film that happened back in 2005, as well as the fan-beloved Sleepy Hollow series. “Raven’s love of all things Iron Fist and his extensive knowledge of martial arts films made him the perfect choice to continue telling the adventures of Danny Rand and Colleen Wing,” stated Executive VP of Marvel Television Jeph Loeb, “Season One and The Defenders are only the beginning of this fantastic action packed tale.” No date has been attached, and the cast of the show wasn’t in the know of this when it was announced last

Of the Marvel/Netflix series, Iron Fist was the most controversial. Those who didn’t understand the comic character believed that Marvel was whitewashing in order to “appeal” to others. Then, when the series arrived, it was clear that the quality was not that of its Marvel counterparts. The acting wasn’t very good, the story was nonsensical, and the action was incredibly choppy and uneven, which was odd as Iron Fist is meant to be a pure martial arts piece. Despite this, at San Diego Comic Con, during the Defenders panel, a second season of Iron Fist was announced, much to the surprise at everyone at the panel, including Iron Fist himself Finn Jones. What was teased though is that Misty Knight will be coming to this season as well. No release date for when it could happen though.

With the recent reveal of the first Defenders trailer, Marvel is getting the hype train started for their next great hero team-up. But a mystery that is slowly growing is about the villains of the piece. Because though we know that Sigourney Weaver will be playing the lead villain known as Alexandra, and that Elektra will be involved too, we don’t know how it’ll tie together.
