In the last generation of consoles, BioShock stood out as one of the premier franchises. The new intellectual property was established in 2007 with the release of BioShock on Xbox 360 and PlayStation and eventually went on to spawn two sequels and a host of spin-offs in other mediums. Each entry in the series received widespread critical acclaim and helped bring new life to the first-person shooter genre that has become somewhat stale thanks to the huge popularity of Battlefield and Call of Duty. Little wonder then that 2K Games would look to BioShock when it came time to remaster some of their back catalogue of titles for a new generation of consoles. The franchise was simply ripe for an update, with the first release coming almost a decade ago and fans clamoring to be able to visit Rapture once again with upgraded visuals and performance. While 2K Games have yet to officially confirm the existence of a BioShock collection, rumors seem to have been given some extra credence after the Brazilian ratings board released information about a title called BioShock: The Collection. The Classificação Indicativa revealed that the title would be released for the PlayStation 3, Xbox One, PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. This suggests that the collection might not be a fully remastered version of the three titles but rather an upscaled edition. The BioShock series began in 2007 with the release of BioShock, and was later continued with BioShock 2 and BioShock Infinite. BioShock 2 was a direct sequel to the original game but was developed by 2K Marin and 2K Australia rather than Irrational Games, who returned to the franchise with BioShock Infinity. Ken Levine, the founder and head of Irrational Games, released a stunning press release Tuesday, that Irrational Games will be laying off all but 15 people after the final DLC released for”Bioshock Infinite”. “Bioshock” and its sequel “Bioshock Infinite” (“Bioshock 2” was handled by a different developer) are two of the most critically acclaimed games released for the previous generation of systems (PS3, X360, Wii), making the news a bit of a shock to many in the industry, no pun intended. As Kev Levine put it, “I am winding down Irrational Games as you know it. I’ll be starting a smaller, more entrepreneurial endeavor at Take-Two. That is going to mean parting ways with all but about fifteen members of the Irrational team.
