I enjoyed the 80s cartoon Jem, and one of my favorite characters was Pizzazz, the lead singer of The Misfits. Her speaking voice was provided by my next interview subject, Patricia Alice Albrecht. I feel that Ms. Albrecht bought a great over-the-top attitude to Pizzazz, and I knew I wanted to interview her someday. That interview came about on Tuesday, September 6th. I spoke to Ms. Albrecht about not only Jem, but also her live-action work. Contrary to the character of Pizzazz, Ms. Albrecht is a very soft-spoken and kind performer. Patricia: Oh my goodness. You know, I really liked classical music, like Tchaikovsky. In case you haven’t seen the latest box officer results, just about every new movie that came out last weekend flopped pretty badly. One of those movies was the adaptation of Jem, titled Jem and the Holograms. Director Jon Chu (G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Step Up 3D) spoke about the film bombing at the box office at the Film Independent Forum in Los Angeles on Saturday (via THR) and just how ugly it has gotten. Chu, one of the keynote speakers for the conference, stated, “So, this is a bit awkward only because I’m supposed to be here this morning talking about how great it is to be in the movie business — it’s so awesome — but currently, I don’t know if you’ve looked at box office numbers, this morning specifically, it hasn’t been the greatest.” Chu described some of the negative reactions and hate mail he received from fans. “I get fans sending me hate mail, I get death threats, I get racist remarks — it’s a really fun business,” Chu remarked.

For quite a few years, I’ve done my best to keep an open mind about remakes and re-imaginings of older movies, TV shows and songs. For example, the Brian DePalma version of “Scarface” is one of my all-time favorite films. I felt that “The Looney Tunes Show” was an underrated take on the classic Warner Brothers characters and served as a vast improvement for the character of Lola Bunny (voiced by Kristen Wiig). I loved Joan Jett And The Blackhearts’ version of “I Love Rock ‘N Roll”. Sometimes, though, I see a preview of a remake or a re-imagining and I just don’t have enthusiasm for it. That was the case when I saw the trailer for the upcoming live-action version of “Jem And The Holograms”. I wanted to be enthusiastic for it, especially since Samantha Newark (Jem’s speaking voice and a former interview subject and current Facebook friend) will be making a legacy cameo in the film.
