When the Veronica Mars panel started at SDCC, we expected some kind of gift like a screening of the first episode of the coming Hulu miniseries, or the first two episodes. The season that just aired was #3; we’ve got 13 episodes left. That is bullshirt. But it’s his decision, not the network’s. Schur’s letter in full: After The Good Place was picked up for season two, the writing staff and I began to map out, as best we could, the trajectory of the show. Given the ideas we wanted to explore, and the pace at which we wanted to present those ideas, I began to feel like four seasons – just over 50 episodes – was the right lifespan. Last month, we were introduced to Veronica Mars’ taser. This week, we get to see her use it. Some fool attempts to rob Veronica at gunpoint, but he picked the wrong blonde to mess with this time. She easily takes him down, zaps his guts, and snaps an Instagram photo for good measure. But she’s just getting started: when someone starts blowing up Neptune CA’s resort hotels, it’s something she can’t let slide. We’re then shown clips from the upcoming eight episodes: seems the motive behind the bombings is to sabotage Neptune’s reputation as a great Spring Break tourist destination. A long time ago, a show called Veronica Mars and I used to be friends. The story of a scrappy, smart-mouthed amateur detective in a class-divided coastal community was well-written and made Kristen Bell a star, but people often forget how perilous its tightrope walk along the TV business wire was. The fact that the original run has even three seasons is a miracle. Its first two seasons were on UPN, considered the lowest broadcast network in its day (and in its dying years to boot). When The WB and UPN merged to form The CW, there were suddenly only half the spaces available for returning shows, and Veronica Mars somehow made it through with the stipulation that she stick to smaller mystery arcs and that her theme song get eviscerated. Making the show worse didn’t help the ratings, and the show was anticlimactically cancelled without an ending. Stay cool, soda pop. Last month we told you it could happen….today we can confirm it will. Veronica Mars is coming back. Kristen Bell broke the news today in a short Instagram video where she coyly chatted up the fact that reruns of the original series were headed to Hulu…before revealing the same streaming giant had officially picked up the series for an eight-episode fourth season. “Veronica has always been a super hero without a cape,” states Bell. “And I think she’s exactly what the world needs right now. Thank you to all my fellow marshmallows who stayed excited.” Veronica Mars already returned back in 2014 in the form of a feature film, crowdfunded into existence by a record $6 million Kickstarter campaign. That film seemed to wrap everything up….so where does Neptune’s intrepid sleuth go from there? After the movie, creator Rob Thomas wrote and published a series of mystery novels starring Ms. Mars. We have Kristen Bell because we had Veronica Mars: a spunky teenage detective noir series that ran for two seasons on UPN and one more on the then-new CW. Given Bell’s well-known cheery-face persona by this point, she almost seems miscast as the sulking, deadpan Ms. Mars, but her talent showed through. The show’s meager three seasons catapulted it into cult status and launched her career going forward. Back when crowdfunding was young, one of Kickstarter’s first big successes was the funding of a Veronica Mars movie meant to give the series the wrap-up it never received.
