PAX West: Decidueye Shown Off In New Demo

Despite the Nintendo Switch being a new console, Nintendo has been bringing some ports from the Wii U onto it. First came Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and later this month we’re getting Pokemon Tournament DX. This port will bring all the arcade characters that were released into Japan via the Arcade version of the game, as well as a new character via Pokemon Sun and Moon in Decidueye. At PAX West, we got our first look at him in action. As you see, he embraces both his Flying and Grass type moveset, while also embracing his archer like appearance with its super move, which is all kinds of cool. Pokken Tournament DX arrives on September 22nd.

When it was announced that the creators of Tekken would be making a Pokemon fighting title, called Pokken Tournament, many wondered how similar the two titles would be. But as the team admitted, though it may have started out as Tekken with Pokemon, it soon evolved into something much more true to the Pokemon titles than the fighting game. “As we worked on it,” began development director and producer of the Tekken series Katsuhiro Harada, “We knew we wanted to show off the Pokemon, and that led to implementing the [free movement] Field Phase, and we just really realized quickly in that prototype phase that we needed to just kind of create this whole thing from scratch. We even built an entire new rendering engine, and kind of came up with and entire new battle system for it. Amiibo and Nintendo fans might be happy to know that every single one of their Amiibo figurines will be compatible with the upcoming Pokemon franchise fighting game, Pokken Tournament. The tidbit was revealed on the official website for the game, the game is “compatible with all Amiibo accessories unlocking in-game items.” Considering how popular and insane the Amiibo craze has become, this sounds like a great way to capitalize on the Amiibo toys. In addition, the game will include a Shadow Mewtwo Amiibo card as a special gift for the first edition of the game. The Amiibo card will immediately unlock Shadow Mewtwo as a playable character in the game right away. The card will only be available with the physical version of the game and not the downloaded version. It’s currently unknown what functions the Amiibos will unlock. Pokken Tournament is quite the unusual title, but one that is gaining quite a following here in the states. The use of Pokemon in a straight up fighting game, one that’s being made by the creators of Tekken, seems to point to this being quite a unique experience, yet one that will fully embrace the vast world of Pokemon. A few months back Nintendo and Bandai Namco made the surprise announcement of a Pokemon fighter arcade game, called “Pokken Tournament” because it’s half Tekken, half Pokemon. Machamp, Lucario, Suicune and many other “tough” members of the Pokemon universe will meet in a grassy field and battle each other at your command and inputs. It sounded great, but with the arcade market in this country much worse off than it is in Japan, the odds of our ever getting to play it without taking a plane trip felt low. Not so fast! The restaurant-slash-arcade chain Dave and Busters heard about the game, and they’re interested too. They offered Namco the option to beta-test Pokken Tournament in several of their restaurants, and Namco agreed. It’s natural to think that when a certain franchise gets made by a certain developer, that the tone and style will adapt to that company’s strengths. It sounds like the kind of thing you would see developed illegally in sprite form by an amateur-hour team of teenagers, but it’s going to actually exist: an arcade fighter where all the contestants are Pokemon. In fact, it will literally be an arcade fighter with its own cabinet: a spinoff of Tekken, Pokken Tournament. Bandai Namco is creating the game under license from Nintendo and Tekken team lead Katsuhiri Harada is in charge of development. The game’s matches are first played in a 3-D open-field arena, then in a “duel phase” where the Pokemon fight close and hand-to-hand. Lucario, Machamp, Suicune, Guardevoir and the obligatory Pikachu (who has a special move entitled “Eagle Wind God Fist”) are the announced battlers so far, with more to be revealed in the months leading to the game’s release.
