If it’s been a stressful week, relax and recharge with Shovel Knight. The blue-armored, garden-tool-wielding hero is the subject of the eighth album in the Prescription For Sleep series, a string of soft, lullaby-style renditions of popular video game tunes. The album spans 19 tracks covering not only the original game but all its DLC including the new King of Cards spinoff. Yacht Club Games and Scarlet Moon Records are pleased to present the eighth album in the Billboard-charting Prescription for Sleep: Game Music Lullabies series with PRESCRIPTION FOR SLEEP: SHOVEL KNIGHT. This volume has been crafted under the careful guidance of Yacht Club Games, featuring GENTLE LOVE’s unique brand of jazzy lullabies to sleep, relax, and study to. When you think of indie game success stories, Yacht Club Games’ Shovel Knight usually comes first to mind. The team took the classic gameplay from DuckTales and other NES titles and resurrected it anew, creating a new iconic character that has made cameos in dozens of other games now. Standing out in the crowded indie game scene isn’t an easy task, and depends a LOT on luck, but Yacht Club pulled it off and Shovel Knight is high-quality enough to deserve the hype. The original game has been out for years, though, and people have wondered if there’s ever going to be a sequel. When you consider that Shovel Knight is perhaps THE most successful retro-style indie game of its kind, you have to wonder why there’s never been a sequel. Instead, Yacht Club Games has been content to produce DLC content and add-ons for the original. It was 2014 when the original version of the game came out. By the time it’s “finished” it will be about five years old. Shovel Knight has had three different DLC campaigns to date. A fourth was announced in 2017, and they just announced a fifth today. Both the fourth and fifth expansions, called King of Cards and Shovel Knight Showdown respectively, are now due out in the spring of 2019. While King of Cards is a traditional side-scroller like the rest, Showdown is a multiplayer fighting game that will also be sold separately. If you bought Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove, both DLCs are covered by that purchase, but there will also be an updated Treasure Trove that includes everything physically. Shovel Knight is one of the most popular games of recent memory. It started out as a Kickstarter, then became a full-on gaming phenomenon, being put into other games, shows, and even getting a special Amiibo figure. What’s more, developer Yacht Club games took their winnings from the main game and made a series of spinoffs/expansions. And now, the last of these are set to arrive soon via Shovel Knight: King of Cards. King of Cards focuses on King Knight, the “glorious” and “regal” member of the Order of No Quarter, and this expansion shows how he got into the group and got his throne. You might think that the Amiibo craze has died down, and yet, you couldn’t be more wrong, as Nintendo is still bringing out more and more figurines for various games. But in an interesting twist, a new trio of Amiibo have been confirmed for a game that was not made by Nintendo: Shovel Knight. Now yes, Shovel Knight has been on both the Wii U and the Nintendo Switch, but it’s still a multiplatform game, yet, Yacht Club Games and Nintendo are back again to make Shovel Knight Amiibo. This time, they’re making them for Plague Knight, Spectre Knight, and King Knight. If that sounds familiar somehow, it’s because these were the main characters of the spinoffs/expansions of Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows, Spectre of Torment, and the upcoming King of Cards. They even had a special trailer made for the game…umm…yeah, this was made and done by Game Grumps, who show the “love” of Amiibo in…uh…interesting ways…you’ve been warned.

The third and final expansion for Shovel Knight has been revealed at the Nindies Summer Showcase. As previously announced, King of Cards will feature King Knight as the playable character and will see a new card-based mechanic introduced to shakeup the gameplay somewhat. This DLC follows the Plague of Shadows and Specter of Torment expansions. These are available for free to anyone who owned the original Shovel Knight game, which was updated to Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove following its release on the Nintendo Switch. UDON and Yacht Club Games this week officially announced that fans of Shovel Knight will be able to purchase a new art book later this year with Shovel Knight: Official Design Works. The new book will be 150 pages of artwork based on the breakout hit game, Shovel Knight. The book will collect all the artwork based on the game. The book will feature character art, developer commentary, rough illustrations, concept art, background development images, sprite sheets, full-page promotional artwork, and more. Also included will be comprehensive interviews with the game’s developers. Yacht Club Games commented in an official press release. “After more than a year of work, it’s finally complete! We here at Yacht Club Games are proud and delighted to realize one of our dreams – a Shovel Knight art book produced by UDON! Yacht Club Games revealed this week that Shovel Knight is coming to the Nintendo Switch. According to the announcement, Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove and Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment will both be released on the new Nintendo console, which comes later this year. Shovel Knight is set to become Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove, and it will enable players to have options to purchase each campaign as separate and standalone games. This will be available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, Mac, Linux and Nintendo Switch. Additionally, a new Body Swap Mode for Shovel Knight is set to launch at the same time as Specter of Torment. Body Swap Mode is a new mode that’s included in the game’s main campaign. It will feature illustrations of all-new designs for body-swapped versions of the main characters. Another announcement is that the game will now have local two-player co-op in the campaign. This is part of an upcoming free update to all console platforms for the game, including PC and except 3DS and Vita.

The soundtrack to the hit indie platformer Shovel Knight is set to be released on vinyl. The Double-LP Blue Vinyl, which features every song from the game, is available to pre-order right now from BigWax. The special edition offering also comes with some additional content that should make the purchase even more special for fans of Shovel Knight. Not only does the vinyl release contain all the music from the game but it also comes with custom artwork that was created specially by Hitoshi Ariga, the man responsible for many illustrations in Pokemon and Mega Man. It also contains commentary from both of the composers, Jake Kaufman and Manami Matsumae. Meanwhile, BandCamp are offering a 2-disc CD version of the soundtrack for those who want a more modern physical version of the music for their collection. Those who have bought indie platformer Shovel Knight are set to get even more for their money in the near future, as the developer behind the game has announced it is creating a host of new free DLC for the title. Teasing the upcoming expansions on their developer blog, Yacht Club Games has revealed that they are working on two new campaigns for Shovel Knight, one focusing on the Specter Knight and another for the King Knight. These will not only include brand new attacks and abilities that are not available in the base version of the game but will also give players the chance to experience two distinct stories personal to the individual characters. That isn’t all though, the studio is also working on a competitive multiplayer gametype called Battle Mode and a Body Swap feature that will allow players to change the genders of some of the character, including the titular Shovel Knight. The first third-party amiibo figure was released last weekend — Yacht Club Games’ Shovel Knight. If this is the first time you’ve heard about this, it’s too late to buy one. The good news is that Yacht Club is prepared to run as many Shovel Knight printings as possible to satisfy demand, so if you can wait, you’ll eventually find one for market price. A day or so after the Shovel Knight amiibo was out, social media began reporting an interesting fact about it: the amiibo could be scanned and used with the Shovel Knight game without taking it out of the box. Up to this point. Nintendo’s amiibo have come packaged with a piece of foil between the figure’s bottom and the plastic blister packaging, forcing them to be removed in order to be used with a game.
