Ack! The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have been around for forty years?? It’s true — if you go back to the VERY beginning. The whole thing started in 1984 as an independent comic book launched by creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. At the time, it was a half-parody of trends in the comics business: teenagers, mutants and ninjas were all popular, as was Frank Miller’s run in Daredevil, which introduced ninjas called the Hand and a sensei called Stick. So the Turtles fought ninjas called the Foot and had a sensei called Splinter (get it?) It went beyond just a joke and became its own thing — and then some. TMNT has taken many forms across a lot of media, but it’s managed to endure in its original comic book form since the beginning. Last week IDW announced a 2024 relaunch for their TMNT ongoing book, and confirmed Jason Aaron was being hired as head writer. This week they’ve followed up that announcement with the reveal of the four artists that will be working on the title. It looks like each artist will be introduced one at a time, handling one specific Turtle in one specific issue. Issue #1 will be all about Raphael and will be drawn by Joelle Jones. “For me, working on TMNT was first a nostalgia hit – being an ’80s kid, I consumed it all!” said Jones. “But at its heart, and why I think it still resonates with people today, is that it’s a story about a family of outcasts brimming with personality and the conflicts that come out of it. A couple days ago we reported on IDW’s “final” issue of TMNT with a lot of “stuff in quote marks” as we already knew that wasn’t the end of it. Before then, news had broke of Turtles owner Paramount striking a new extended deal with IDW for further years of comics. What we didn’t know was what IDW had planned from that point, but as of this evening we do. The relaunch of the TMNT comic will be led by writer Jason Aaron, winner of the Eisner Award and veteran of the industry with a record as long as his graying beard. In the past he’s written for such characters as Wolverine, Ghost Rider, Batman and Thor. If you read the newspost we put up last week about IDW and Paramount renewing their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles license agreement, you’d be forgiven to be a bit skeptical about the claim that the upcoming 150th issue of the current TMNT series will be its last. Nevertheless, the event being promoted feels pretty apocalyptic and “final” and it’s described as a “conclusion of the ongoing series.” The situation: a megalodon called Armaggon has time-consuming powers and is attempting to change histoty by erasing the Ninja Turtles from it. Donatello manages to survive and escape into the past, where he must find a way to prevent the catastrophe from ever happening. IDW has been the home of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for quite some time now. The TMNT got their start in the comics, after all, 40 years ago as a humble black and white indie release. Now a new deal between IDW and Paramount assures their current gig will continue for quite some time to come. The two companies have signed a full renewal of the TMNT comic book contract that extends IDW’s use of the license for many years. Everyone is eagerly anticipating Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, the return of the ninjas who are turtles to the big screen in a fresh new form. Kevin Eastman’s The Last Ronin, a TMNT story set in a hypothetical dark future where Michelangelo is the last living Turtle, was a huge hit for publisher IDW. It made the New York Times bestseller list and drove the company to introduce expansions like a prequel called Lost Years and even a book consisting of just the covers. Now it’s time for the next step, as Eastman and IDW announce The Last Ronin II. Turns out the Ronin wasn’t so “last” after all! It’s a bit of a spoiler as to how this story continues, so if you haven’t read the original Last Ronin yet and don’t want to know, skip this next paragraph… The original book ended with the reveal of four surviving mutant furtles, Yi, Uno, Odyn, and Moja, who were now growing up under the care and tutelage of their sensei, Casey Marie (April and Casey’s daughter). The new series will pick things up from there, following the Next Generation Turtles as they defend New York’s future.

There may not be a lot of movie news coming out of SDCC this year…but there will be plenty of comics! The likes of Disney and Universal panels will be replaced by panels showcasing what the convention was meant to be about in the first place. Comics publisher IDW has a lot planned, and they laid it all out for us today. IDW writers, editors and staff will be discussinf their Star Trek line, and future comics they have in store for the brand, on Thursday, July 20 at 12 PM. All things TMNT will be discussed in the Turtlemania panel on Saturday at 11 AM. Sonic The Hedgehog comics will have a panel on Sunday at 10 AM, spotlighting “the 900th adventure” — we’re not sure what that means or what kind of weird math they’re using to get that figure. Critics praised TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge when it came out for modern consoles and PC last year. A new installment in the storied tradition of Ninja Turtle beat-em-ups, it retained the spirit of 90s arcade action while updating it to feel fresh again. It’s going to be a good year for animated movies. We get Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse in mere days, and a couple months after that, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles leap onto the big screen in their fir====er, SECOND ever animated film, subtitled Mutant Mayhem. This is a different breed of Ninja Turtle than you’re used to seeing, but in this case, that’s not a bad thing. Seth Rogen’s take on the concept introduces the youngest Turtles ever to crawl the sewers and still identify as teenagers. The stylish, painted look of the animation is amazing, and it’s probably the influence of Jeff Rowe, who co-directed this film and was also responsible for the look of Netflix’s The Mitchells Vs The Machines.
