The Epic Games Store Version of Tomb Raider Remastered Was Accidentally Better

Tomb Raider Remastered has been out now for a couple weeks, on multiple platforms. On PC, it’s available on both Steam and Epic Games Store, but when fans began comparing the two, they picked up on some unexpected differences. Namely, the EGS version seemed to be more polished than the Steam version. Textures were improved, effects were more convincing and environments had more detail. Why was the less popular client getting superior code? Developer Aspyr responded today and admitted they goofed up…but not in the way you’d expect. The actual version of TR Remastered that was supposed to release, on both platforms, was…the Steam version. The EGS version has since been updated with the inferior graphics effects of the other. Why on Earth would this be happening? As someone who’s dabbled in game development I can take a guess. Games are usually built as fancy as the developers want them to be, and then gradually “scaled back” due to baffling glitches, hardware limitations or deadlines….or a combination of those three.

The Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered collection launches this week on consoles and PC; it’s basically the intact classic version of Lara Croft’s first three adventures with some cosmetic upgrades. It’s not a full-on remake like FF7 is currently doing; all the environments are as charmingly blocky as they’ve always been, just with improved textures and a higher polygon count on Lara herself. The tank controls, which were a pain in 1996 and even worse to deal with now, are also gone (but you have the option of bringing them back). Thing is, this re-release is meant to bridge the gap during the long, long wait for whenever Lara’s next, never-before-seen adventure is revealed. Today we got one micro-step closer when developer Crystal Dynamics revealed a drawing on their website of what Lara Croft should look like when she reappears. First Peek At Tomb Raider And Devil May Cry Anime

Two years ago Netflix announced they were producing more anime shows based around video games, after the success of their Castlevania cartoon. They signed deals with Capcom and Square Enix (at the time) to produce anime for Devil May Cry and Tomb Raider respectively. Today we got our first look at what both those shows will look like. There’s not much to the Devil May Cry anime trailer, just a few seconds of footage. It’s series protagonist Dante grinning, jumping around and firing his guns. We can’t glean much about the show from this, but presumably if it’s accurate, it would be as over the top as the game series is (that’s the hope anyway). Animation is being handled by Studio Mir, and Adi Shankar, who produced the Castlevania anime, is helming this one as well. It’s been so darn long since we last had a Tomb Raider game that we’ll take whatever scraps we can get. A tie-in with a pressure hose washing simulator? Fine, about time. And Tomb Raider Reloaded, today’s subject, may be a mobile game, but it looks competent enough to scratch the snarky British heiress-shaped itch we have. Reloaded is a roguelike, that hip genre that half of all indie games these days are based around. But the genre seems like a smart thing to fit Tomb Raider around — it’s about venturing into booby-trapped dungeons and seeing how far you can get. The further you survive, the better treasure you can pick up. We kind of wish a higher-budgeted TR game was devoted to this concept. But at least it exists in some form. Phoebe Waller-Bridge signed a deal with Amazon last year to produce exclusive original content for them, and as of today, we now know what the first of those will be. Surprisingly, it’s a Tomb Raider TV show. As reported by THR, Phoebe is writing the episodes and serving as executive producer, but is not playing Lara herself. She’s a bit too old to play the svelte adventurer. Waller-Bridge tends to do good work. She’s most famous for creating and starring in Fleabag, but she was also responsible for the first season of Killing Eve (which turned out to be the best season) and she has her hands in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (who knows how that will turn out). Having her involved with Tomb Raider is kind of a curve. We know a lot of filmmakers have struggled to make Lara work as a film character. PowerWash Simulator is a surprise PC hit from last year where you’re a person in a full-body suit shooting a hose of pressurized water at dirty targets. Your simple yet addictive goal is to clean everything you see that is dirty. Now it’s coming to consoles, and to commemorate the occasion, the development team has cooked up your biggest challenge yet: Lara Croft’s mansion. For some reason the Tomb Raider heroine’s home is covered top to bottom in filth. She’s busy chasing treasure around the world and has no time to deal with this, so she’s hired the PowerWash team. You’ll be washing the entire manor clean, top to bottom, inside and out. This includes things like a giant dinosaur statue (guess both she and Batman own one) and valuables she’s picked up from her adventures. Some weird news entered the video game industry in the last few hours — Amazon is getting involved in Tomb Raider. Hearing this name in relation to the brand is rather unexpected, as for one thing, the TR property is currently owned by someone who ISN’T Amazon, and two, Amazon rarely gets involved in things it can’t own 100%. Tomb Raider, and all Eidos-originated Western World properties that used to be owned by Square Enix, were dumped by that company last year and picked up by Embracer Group, the Norse organization you’ve never heard of that owns half of everything. Did Embracer sell TR? No, not really. Is a studio within Amazon making the game? No, it’s not that either — Crystal Dynamics is still responsible for development. Sometimes it pays to stay up late. Around 11 PM Pacific (or 8 AM in Europe, which will make sense in a minute), Square Enix made the announcement that it was henceforth abandoning any and all plans to produce video games with a distinctly Western flavor. We’re talking the content produced by Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal, and Square Enix Montreal — studios that weren’t originally Square studios but were brought under the umbrella when Square wanted to target the West more aggressively. They have now changed their minds. Whether the lackluster performance of Marvel’s Avengers made them pivot or something else, Square’s lost its taste for gritty American and European styled game worlds and will henceforth focus exclusively on the Japanese fantasy stuff it’s best known for. The purchaser is the onimously-named Embracer Group, formerly THQ Nordic, a  European outfit that’s been on a buying spree these past few years. There will be no E3 this year, but in case you were hoping for the next Tomb Raider to be revealed anyway….uhh, you’ve actually got a much longer wait. Crystal Dynamics admitted today they are only just NOW getting started on that game. Blame Marvel’s Avengers for taking all their time up to now. Lara Croft is 25! And to celebrate Tomb Raider’s anniversary, Square is doing….nothing, game-wise. They are, however, selling a new series of collector’s art pieces based around the existing games in the series, which will be available for a limited time starting today. And yes, we are talking about actual, printed art pieces, not URLs to digital files that cost hundreds of dollars and accelerate the pace of global warming. Square doesn’t work that way….yet. There was a Tomb Raider game released for the Game Boy Advance in 2003. Subtitled “The Prophecy,” it was a sidescroller much like its Game Boy Color predecessors, because no one figured a 3D Tomb Raider could be done on the underpowered handheld. Turns out they were wrong. Programmer Xproger shocked everyone last weekend when he uploaded a video of the original Tomb Raider (the 3D one) running on the GBA. There is no extra hardware involved here, no cheating, no wires. The game was running off the original GBA’s power. You might be wondering how (just like we are). The GBA had rotation and scaling abilities that were just a cut above what a SNES could do. This could be fashioned into 3D areas if a coder was inventive enough. There were several first-person shooters released for the GBA and a couple 3D racing games. But there was nothing on this level; nothing pushing this many polygons at once (okay fine, there was that insane Asterix game from Europe).
