It’s kind of disheartening to see some projects struggle through the Hollywood machine for over a decade, only to finally see release but land with an anticlimactic thud. Projects like Disney’s Treasure Planet, or FX’s Y The Last Man (just cancelled after one season and ten years of development). Sony’s Uncharted looks like another one in the making. Sony has been trying to push out a feature film adaption of Naughty Dog’s hit Playstation series since 2008, one year after the release of the first game. At one point Mark Wahlberg was enlisted to play the protagonist, treasure hunter Nathan Drake, but it took so long to get the movie going that he aged out of the role and, in the final, has been cast as Sully instead. The role of the lead went to Tom Holland, and if you just did a double take reading that, you’re not the only one. Next to Lara Croft, Nathan Drake is the most popular Archeologist/adventurer in the world of videogames. This Sony Playstation exclusive franchise had spawned five games. The uncharted series had sold 41 million combined copies. That is an exceptional achievement for a Sony Exclusive title that is not multiplatform. One of the most successful movie franchise of Sony Pictures is The Spiderman films. Tom Holland made two spiderman films at this moment. Sony doesn’t fully own Spiderman. That is why he appears in Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. Marvel owns Spiderman, but Sony owns his solo movie rights. Tom Holland proved he could put butts in theater seats. Sony decided to cast him as one of their iconic characters, Nathan Drake. Holland is too young to play Drake, but the first movie will be his origin story. Drake is a middle-aged man in the games. We wish we could say were getting an Uncharted movie at some point — Sony probably wishes they could say so too — but the project has been hit with yet another delay. This time, it’s for a very familiar reason….the director they hired had to bail. Uncharted: The Movie was first announced in 2009 and its first director, David O. Russell, was hired in 2010. Russell left the project in 2011, and was replaced by Neil Burger (The Illusionist). Burger took one bite and split in 2012…two years after that, Sony announced the hiring of Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses). He also left one year later, and a year after that, Sony re-announced the movie and said Shawn Levy would direct. Two years later, Levy bailed. Altogether, Uncharted has now spent over a decade in development hell, despite being (in theory) as simple to execute as an Indiana Jones ripoff would be. What hurts about this is that under their most recent directorial hire, the movie had a real shot.

Sony has been trying to get a movie based on Naughty Dog’s Uncharted series of video games off the ground for some time now. The series, an Indiana Jones riff starring a cocky treasure-seeking hero, would seem to be more adaptable as a motion picture than other video games which get this treatment. You’d think, at least. But the Uncharted movie does not have a single shot filmed to this day. The reason is that Sony just can’t seem to land on a director. David O. Russell, Neil Burger, Seth Gordon, and Joe Carnahan have all been attached to direct the Uncharted movie at some point, and all bailed for other projects. The latest was Shawn Levy, who has Stranger Things, A Night At The Museum and Real Steel on his resume. It felt like this project was finally going forward. But think again…. If you ask any fan of Naughty Dog’s Uncharted series which real-world actor should play the character Nathan Drake (who has been the star of every Uncharted save one), the answer you usually get is “Nathan Fillion,” and not just because they share the same first name. Drake resembles Fillion, and Fillion is good at playing scrappy rough adventuring scoundrels, even if he doesn’t get paid to play them often enough. Sony has been trying to get an Uncharted movie off the ground for several years now, but every time the project starts up, it never gets far enough for an open casting call before it collapses. Most recently, a movie prequel to the games was announced, with Shawn Levy (Stranger Things) attached as director, but nobody’s heard from that film in a while, so…assume the worst. Deadline reported some casting news today that is sure to get a lot of controversy. According to the outlet’s report, Sony Pictures has opted to cast Spider-Man: Homecoming star Tom Holland as Nate Drake, the protagonist of Naughty Dog and PlayStation’s smash hit video game franchise, Uncharted. Additionally, the report indicates Holland will star in a redrafted prequel to the video game franchise. Shawn Levy is attached to direct a film that was inspired by a sequence from Uncharted 3, that featured young Nate Drake and his first encounter with “Sully” Sullivan; Drake’s longtime friend, mentor and partner. The idea to reformat the movie apparently came from Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman; an infamous name that’s very derisive among comic and other film fans. He apparently came up with this idea after watching a recent cut of Spider-Man: Homecoming. Sony for years has tried and failed to get an Uncharted movie off the ground. If there’s one thing that always happens in the video game industry, it’s change in regards to game developers. Studios close, heads of certain divisions leave or are replaced, and new teams are brought in to bring new life to games or studios. Uncharted Creator Amy Hennig to Have PAX West Keynote

PAX has officially announced that Uncharted creator and Visceral Games Creative Director Amy Hennig is going to deliver the PAX West 2016 Keynote address this year. In addition, the full schedule of panels will be available on the Guidebook mobile app very soon. Hennig previously worked at Naughty Dog, where she helped create the Uncharted franchise and the hero Nathan Drake. She’s currently working on a new Star Wars game at Visceral. Speaking on the news, Penny Arcade co-founder Jerry Holkins stated, “Amy’s revolutionary work on the Uncharted series played an immeasurable role in shaping the modern gaming landscape. We’re thrilled PAX West attendees will have the chance to listen to one of gaming’s leading visionaries.” Amy Hennig delivering the keynote is good news.   The Uncharted movie is going through some further movement at Sony Pictures. After a number of years in development hell, Variety reports that writer and director Joe Carnahan is attached to write another draft of the script. Since Carnahan is currently committed to direct Bad Boys 3 next, his schedule won’t currently allow him to serve as the helmer for the upcoming video game adaptation. The live-action Uncharted movie has already been passed around many filmmakers and writers for many years. It’s development goes all the way back to around 2009. Previously, director David O. Russell was attached to direct the film, with Mark Wahlberg attached to star as Nathan Drake. Chris Pratt was also reportedly offered the coveted role of Nathan Drake in the past.
