Transformers: Devastation Video Game is More Than Meets the Eye
The lovable robots and stars of the mega franchise, the Transformers, are returning in a brand new video game that is being developed by Platinum Games. Transformers: Devastation was recently revealed. You can check out the announcement trailer for the game in the player below.
Previously, Activision published a series of some third-person shooter Transformers game that were developed by High Moon Studios with Transformers: War for Cybertron and Transformers: Fall of Cybertron. Unfortunately, Fall of Cybertron was followed up by the horrendously awful Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark, which was a subpar follow-up to the previous entries in the franchise. It was also not developed by High Moon, and it was not a good game. Platinum, which has a reputation for making some fun games, looks to be making a fresh start with their own take on the classic Hasbro toy and animation franchise.
Based on the new trailer, Transformers: Devastation looks like a 3D brawler/fighting game. One thing that does look appealing is its animated style. The designs are faithful translations of the classic Transformers G1 animated series, with some cool cel-shaded graphics, making the game look like a 3D video game update of the original series. The trailer also features an appearance by the destructive combiner Decepticons called the Constructions, who together form Devastator. If you can actually play as Devastator in this game, that could be pretty awesome.
The game will feature the classic voice actors returning to play the roles they made famous with Frank Welker back as Megatron, the excellent Peter Cullen will voice Optimus Prime and Dan Gilvezan as Bumblee. The game will also allow players to freely switch between robot and vehicle alt-modes in a fight. Players can punch an enemy and send them flying, switch to vehicle mode and then slam into it.
In the new game, the Autobots face the Decepticons after Megatron discovers a new way to harness the enormous power of Plasma Energy in order to Cyberform Earth. That seems to be a call back to the Plasma energy from the series finale of the G1 animated that helped restore Cybertron. Transformers: Devastation is being developed for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 and Windows PC.
