20th Century Fox Stands to Lose More Than $60 Million on Fantastic Four Reboot
The fallout from the less than expected premiere of the Fantastic Four reboot is still underway. In case you didn’t hear, Fantastic Four only made $25.7 million dollars when it opened at the box office this weekend. This is a huge blow to 20th Century Fox in many ways. This was its chance to have two high-grossing Marvel properties going on at the same time. If that had happened, a rumored crossover between the two would’ve made for potentially even more revenue. With this low result, that seems even more unlikely now than it did before.
Further adding to this is the fact that per The Hollywood Reporter, at best, Fox could lose upwards of $60 million dollars due to this disappointing opening. The film was made for $120 million dollars, and that’s not including the tens of millions spent marketing it over the last few months to try and make this a hit.
Ironically though, according to Fox, they’re not giving up on Fantastic Four just yet. Fox’s Chris Aronson stated to THR, “While we’re disappointed, we remain committed to these characters and we have a lot to look forward to in our Marvel universe.”
Now this could just be the party line for the moment, but we’ll have to wait and see for sure. However, it seems impossible at this point that Fox would pursue a sequel to one of the most reviled comic book superhero movies ever. They could make another reboot, but they already rebooted the property after two movies and in less than 10 years. There will be another time limit for Fox to make another film with the Fantastic Four before the character rights revert to Marvel, similar to Daredevil, which became a very successful Netflix TV series.
