Andrew Garfield “Heartbroken” By Spider-Man
There’s always something to be said about how actors and actresses portray literary or comic book characters in TV shows and movies. For if they aren’t portrayed in the way some people expect, they’ll get called out on it. However, if the films aren’t making money, even with great performances, there’s nothing the actors can do to stop change.
This is what happened with Andrew Garfield in regards to his run as Peter Parker in the Amazing Spider-Man films. Despite making a decent amount of money, his run came to an end after two films, and the whole brand got rebooted. Talking on Variety’s “Actors On Actors” with Amy Adams, he reveals that his desire to portray the character of Peter Parker/Spider-Man well was apparently not the “priority” of the film in regards to those making the film:
“There’s something about being that young in that kind of machinery which I think is really dangerous,” Garfield said of his experience with the movies. “I was still young enough to struggle with the value system, I suppose, of corporate America really, it’s a corporate enterprise mostly.”
“I found that really, really tricky. I signed up to serve the story, and to serve this incredible character that I’ve been dressing as since I was three, and then it gets compromised and it breaks your heart,” he said. “I got heartbroken a little bit to a certain degree.”
Tom Holland made his debut as the “new” Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War. With the first new solo film, Spider-Man: Homecoming, releasing next year.
