Be Careful What You Wish Upon In This Trailer
In 2015 Image released a graphic novel called Penny Dora and the Wishing Box. The title character’s name was intentionally similar to “Pandora” because she’d been chosen as the guardian of a magic chest — but the spin here was that instead of releasing plagues and pestilence, it granted wishes. And that was what made it dangerous — if the box was in the wrong hands, the greed of humanity would create its own destruction.
An upcoming horror flick called Wish Upon explores a similar idea, only this time, the box is in the wrong hands to begin with. A selfish teenager named Clare stumbles upon a round ancient artifact with an inscription declaring it will grant seven wishes to its possessor. After nearly being run over by a frenemy from school, Clare grabs the box and says cockily. “I wish Darcy Chapman would just rot!” Cue the next scene where Darcy is screaming in front of the mirror at her decaying face.
The trailer for Wish Upon was released this week. Unfortunately due to poor and gimmicky editing, everything that happens after the rotting scene is kind of an incoherent blur full of screaming and strobe flashing. We can gather than Clare takes full advantage of the box, creating wealth and power for herself and exacting vengeance on anyone who gets in her way…and we also know she’ll eventually get stuck in a mess of her own making, as is the standard in stories like these. We think we also saw Barb from Stranger Things for a couple frames.
We could use Penny Dora to come to her rescue, but unfortunately, her book was cancelled after one story arc due to low sales. So this’ll just have to play out for Clare. Wish Upon comes to theaters this summer.
