Bioshock: Infinite 1999 Mode Details
Brand new gaming mode that will drive gamers to the brink!
Irrational games decided to include its gamers in the developmental process of their upcoming release Bioshock: Infinite (set to release later this year). After yielding the results of a survey given to gamers, Irrational felt they better understood how gamers play and built a new game mode to fit that bill.

So what is ‘1999 mode’? Why should we get so excited about it? 1999 mode is a gaming experience that will prove to be much more demanding and critical than what gamers are used to. You will be forced to make decisions and those decisions will lead to irreversible consequences. If these said choices lead you down a path that doesn’t bode well with your gaming style, you will suffer the consequences of your actions. This mode goes beyond switching difficulties or hitting reset; this is LIFE gaming. Resources need to be planned out and rationed; combat specialization is a MUST (a weapon will be useless to you unless you have the combat specialization required); efficiency and accuracy will be a need in combat and health will be done in an entirely different way (yet to be specified, but we’ll keep you posted!)
Irrational Games is hoping that this new mode will add another dimension to an already very successful franchise. In a release from Bioshock Infinite’s webpage [Source] Irrational Games’ Creative Director said:
We want to give our oldest and most committed fans an option to go back to our roots. In 1999 Mode, gamers face more of the permanent consequences of their gameplay decisions. In BioShock Infinite, gamers will have to sweat out the results of their actions. In addition, 1999 Mode will demand that players pick specializations, and focus on them.” He went on to explain game saves; one of the few things 1999 mode will give you. In a very brief comment, he made the challenge of this mode very clear: “…there are game saves, and you’re gonna f**king need them.
It should be interesting to see this new mode develop in the coming months as we get closer to a release. A risk like this is always exciting for the gaming world; pioneer visions are what keep the industry evolving and growing. If you have any questions about this new mode or anything else regarding the title, Irrational posted an FAQ on the website (linked above) that may answer your inquiries. Bioshock Infinite is certainly a title to keep an eye on. If the previous installments of this series are any indication: Infinite will prove to be riveting, entertaining and most likely mind-bending.
