BioWare Claims Anthem Is More Like Star Wars Than Traditional Sci-Fi
In an interview with CBC, BioWare boss Aaryn Flynn has revealed that the developer considers Anthem to be in the genre of science fantasy like Star Wars rather than the more grounded traditional science fiction. This essentially means that the game will focus more on the mythos of the world rather than having a scientific basic and explanation for everything that happens.
“It’s in a genre we call science fantasy, very much like Star Wars, very much like the Marvel Universe,” said Flynn in the interview. “You see a lot of amazing things happening but we don’t worry too much about why they are happening or how they are happening; the science of it.”
“Mass Effect is more a real hard core science fiction IP. [Anthem] is much more about just having fun in a game world that is really lush and exotic and really sucks you in.”
This obviously will draw comparisons to the other big science fantasy franchise in the gaming world – Destiny. Bungie and Activision are set to release the sequel to that title in September and it seems like there will be plenty of comparisons between the two series. Especially considering Bungie initially pitched Destiny as a “mythic sci-fi” property.
Anthem is set to be BioWare’s first new franchise since the launch of Dragon Age: Origins in 2009. Since then they have worked exclusively on Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and Star Wars: The Old Republic. It has a tentative release date of fall 2018, when it will arrive on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
