Black Bolt Will Have Way To Speak In Inhumans
The Inhumans are a very unique set of beings in the Marvel Universe. They posses powers based on both their genes and a unique substance called Terrigen. What’s more, their leader is one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe because he can emit sound waves so powerful that a single whisper can shatter stone, thus, he’s basically mute until he needs to use his powers. Which…makes for an interesting dilemma with the upcoming Inhumans TV series, because Black Bolt needs to communicate to give the character weight…yet he can’t talk. So, what’s the team to do?
In the comics, Black Bolt communicates via American Sign Language, which both his wife Medusa and other Marvel characters (like Reed Richards) could translate for others. But, since in the upcoming series the Inhumans in Black Bolt’s circle have never been to Earth, that creates a problem, because they can’t have learn sign language there. In an interview thought, actor Anson Mount revealed how they worked around this, they used sign language as a basis, then created their own language that both he, Medusa, and other could understand.
“I’m borrowing some of the underlying rules of ASL and what makes it work efficiently,” he told IGN. “It creates homework and it creates choreography and it creates getting things into the muscle memory. I have to get it so into my muscle memory because I can’t be thinking about it and acting at the same time. And to get yourself to go from here to here, it’s not easy. But it’s easier than learning Spanish; I’ll give you that.”
We’ll have to see how it all plays out when Inhumans arrives in IMAX on September 1st.
