Bruce Campbell Has Officially Retired His Ash Character
Now for some news that’s not so groovy. Bruce Campbell delivered a career-defining performance in 1981’s The Evil Dead and its sequels, successfully marrying horror and comedy through the unhinged, wisecracking, chainsaw-limbed Ash. Campbell made Ash one of the most beloved horror movie characters of the slasher era, if not all time, and though he’s put on a few pounds since, he was welcomed back with open arms when Starz decided to make an Evil Dead TV series.
After three seasons and one surprise daughter, Starz officially cancelled “Ash Vs. Evil Dead” this week. Netflix holds exclusive streaming rights to the show, and fans hoped the streaming giant would save it (and why not, they’ll buy anything on impulse). Those hopes were dashed this morning when Campbell confirmed he has no interest in continuing the role any further.
“Big props to fans for the effort, but I’m retired as Ash,” Campbell tweeted, adding the hashtag “timetofrysomeotherfish”. It’s unknown at this moment what fish he’s referring to. Hopefully he means a new movie or TV role and not, y’know, his lunch.
