Batman: The Animated Newsletter
Weeks of October 8 – October 21, 2001
Volume 4, 1
Rated: PG (as with all other things Batman-related)

THIS ISSUE’S SUBLIMINAL MESSAGE: “HEY LOOK! I MADE IT!”
____________________________________________________________________
SPECIAL NOTE

Wow, what a crazy week. First off, we’re sorry that BTAN didn’t get out on time – but we have very, VERY good excuses! You see, we are going to school and, you know, things pile up. The newsletter has to take a back seat to real work now and again. I know, I know, I cried too, but hey, you have to work with the hand you get, you know? BUT, I finally arranged my schedule to deliver the newsletter but, lo and behold, on the morning of Wednesday, October 3, my hard drive CRASHED.

Yeah. Lovely. Stupid hard drive.

To make a long story short, I thought I’d lost everything! At this point, I’d like to thank all the people that helped me get back online in my absence:

Robyn Johnson (for kindly notifying my co-editor)…
James Harvey (for setting up the re-subscribe address and sending out the word to)…
James Harvey (again, for notifying everyone at the WORLD’S FINEST NEWSPAGE and TOONZONE, to…)
CINESCAPE, THE GOTHAM WEEKLY NEWS, COMICS2FILM, and many other great Bat-institutions on the net that have helped us out time and time again.

Even though I was surprisingly able to sneak onto that destroyed hard drive and receive my files in the end, it was awesome to see everyone pulling together to help James and I (and everyone else at BTAN) out. A huge thanks to everyone! Every last one of you!

And this is why we say this newsletter is “a newsletter for the people”.

Before I forget, I’ll just give you all notice that our proposed “100th Issue Spectacular” will be postponed yet again – hopefully it’ll happen in 2, to commemorate the start of the JLA ‘toon. Or something. We’ll keep you posted.

Oh, and one last thing, we just got our 2300rd subscriber the day I got back online! We are indestructible! Indestructible, I tells ya!

(editor, who is now getting off his soap box – VERY SLOWLY)

EAGERLY ANTICIPATING…
New episodes are on the horizon! Here’s what we can expect in the near future…

-Due to the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington on Sept. 11th, just after our last issue came out, the KidsWB has reworked its schedules for this week. UNMASKED, the only unaired BATMAN BEYOND episode, didn’t air on Friday after all (because it involves Kobra, a terrorist group) and will air at a later date.

-Aquaman will look much different on the JLA series than he did in his appearance in Superman’s A FISH STORY. He’ll look a lot more like how he does in the comics: long hair, hook on his hand, etc.
-The Joker has been redesigned AGAIN for his special appearances on the JLA cartoon. It most closely resembles his reworked “classic” look from RETURN OF THE JOKER. See?

ANIMATED COMICS
-Tim Levins is currently co-plotting of BATMAN: GOTHAM ADVENTURES with Scott Peterson. It looks like it will be a Catwoman story; no word on whether it’ll be an extra-sized issue like #1, though. This issue will be out in May 2002.
-JUSTICE LEAGUE #1 description: “The JLA faces a deadly alien threat! When a meteor lands in an American suburb, the League is called on to investigate. Soon they are drawn into an intergalactic conflict, but it seems as if the real threat may be one of their own – Green Lantern! Our heroes’ adventures may be over as soon as they’ve begun!”

-SUPERMAN ADVENTURES #64
Terry McGinnis pops up in SUPERMAN ADVENTURES #64. Yeah, I’m confused too, but since Brainiac’s involved in this, anything is possible.

-No new news here. But we can assume that now that Frank Miller has finished THE DARK KNIGHT STRIKES BACK, he can focus his writing talents on the screenplay for YEAR ONE.

*BATMAN BEYOND: LIVE ACTION NEWS:
-No new news.

*BATMAN BEYOND: THE FOURTH ANIMATED MOVIE
-At the WIZARD WORLD convention, Paul Dini has confirmed that there will be more animated Bat-movies on the way. Aside from a second BATMAN BEYOND “Nightwing” film (which is always possible), there could possibly be movies featuring team-ups between Batman and Superman, Wonder Woman, Plastic Man, and Green Arrow. These ideas HAVE been greenlighted by the WB.

*CATWOMAN
-No new news on this movie for a while…but yeah, it’s still in production.

*WORLD’S FINEST
-No new news here. Don’t expect this movie to happen for quite a while.

LIVE ACTION TELEVISION
-Despite all the cancellations and postponements due to the terrorist attacks, SMALLVILLE will still debut at the originally slated time: Tuesday, Oct. 16, at 9PM.

EXCLUSIVE INTERNET ENDEAVOURS:
-Gotham Girls need your help. Another Batman newsletter, GOTHAM WEEKLY NEWS, reports that traffic has dropped on the Girls’ site to such an extent that the WB powers that be are hinting that no new productions will get the greenlight. So if you enjoy girly hi-jinks of Gotham’s most notable women or just want to check out some cool web based animation click on over to http://www.gothamgirls.com
-However, these new episodes are still coming out, on the following dates: Oct. 9: #10 – “I’m Badgirl”

TOYS, BOOKS, AND OTHER MERCHANDISE
-For a preview of BATMAN: VENGEANCE for PLAYSTATION 2, go to the following link.
It has videos and stills, too!
http://ps2.ign.com/previews/16274.html
-The release date of BATMAN: DARK TOMORROW for the Nintendo Gamecube has been pushed back to March 2002.
-BTAS is coming to DVD in early 2002! At least that’s what they’re planning on. Currently, all these following projects are high possibilities for DVD:
*Batman: Special Edition (1989)
*Batman: The Animated Series episodes
*Batman & Mr. Freeze: Sub-Zero
*”The Batman/Superman Movie” (World’s Finest)
*Uncut version of Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker
*Four proposed direct-to-video Bat-movies.
-Then again, don’t get your hopes up too much. Just before the delivery of this newsletter, we learned that the WB probably won’t be releasing these for a while. Geez, will they ever make up their minds?
-It looks like Hasbro is releasing a Batman/Joker two-pack based on the new designs of animated series. No accessories appear to be supplied, though. Here’s a link:
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1631345845
-They also appear to have a Batman/Robin two-pack in the same style, but it looks like the Robin figure is Dick Grayson in the Tim Drake suit. Yeah. Check it out:
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1631345205
-Batman and Superman, too! See?
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1631344582
-All the 85 WB stores across the United States will be closed by October, 2001. However, there is word that the other 30 locations, such as in Canada and across the pond in European countries, will remain open because they operate under separate franchise agreements.

COMIC REVIEWS
(BATMAN: GOTHAM ADVENTURES by Tim “TWO-FACE” Leighton)
(BATMAN BEYOND by Tim “TWO-FACE” Leighton)
(SUPERMAN ADVENTURES by Dick Grayson)

BATMAN: GOTHAM ADVENTURES
ISSUE: “Tuesday Night” (#42)
WRITTEN BY: Scott Peterson
PENCILS: Craig Rousseau
INKS: Dan Davis
COLOURIST: Lee Loughridge
LETTERER: Albert T. Deguzman
COVER ART: Bob Smith, Terry Beatty, and Lee Loughridge
ISSUED: September 5, 2001 (Cover date Nov 2001)
RATING: ***

What a Tuesday night. Even though I prefer good ol’ classic superhero vs supervillain story, I commend Scott Peterson on writing a tale focusing on a normal night of simple patrol for Batman and Robin. I’m writing this on the night of when the World Trade Centre was attacked (09-11), so I couldn’t help but draw the parrallels between that and the Dynamic Duo’s search and rescue efforts in a city ablaze in this issue.

Peterson’s minimal dialogue was great, but had it not been for the fabulous visuals by Craig Rousseau and Dan Davis, the issue wouldn’t have been nearly as effective. Fire is a beautiful (but deadly) thing, and this issue proved that on both counts.

I was hoping we’d get to see Firefly be the culprit rather than a computer glitch and sun flares, but just like the tragedy that befell in the U.S. (and the free world) today, sometimes grand-scale chaos comes from the faceless, the unknown.

Who knew that I’d ever get this much out of what I originally thought would be just a simple little fire-fighting tale. Kudos to everyone involved with .

Have a quiet, peaceful Tuesday Night everyone, wherever you may be.

COMIC SCHEDULES & COVERING THE BASICS

This section gives a little bit more in-depth look into each monthly issue of BATMAN: GOTHAM ADVENTURES and BATMAN BEYOND. Below each comic listing is a link to the cover of that comic. TALK ABOUT SERVICE! The price for any of these issues, unless otherwise posted, is $1.99 in the US and…grrrrr…a whopping $3.25 (or higher) in Canada. (Both our editors and many subscribers are Canadian, hence the well-deserved “grrr”.)

If we are unsure of the exact date of when an issue is being released, just check out “DIRECT CURRENTS” for details:
http://www.dccomics.com/directcurrents/

-BATMAN: GOTHAM ADVENTURES #43
October 3rd
Who’s out to get Harley Quinn? Batman has to take her on as a sidekick to find out. The answer awaits deep in Harley’s history…that is, if she and the Dark Knight survive the traps set for them all over Gotham.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Due to demand by some of our subscribers, we’ve decided to give a “Letters to the Editor” section a shot. Feel free to submit something you’d like to say to us, and each issue we’ll choose one to post and then reply to. (NOTE: It can be completely uncensored, positive OR negative, though any coarse language will be bleeped out. We want this to be a no-holds-barred column!)

* * * * * *

Dear Tim,

Hello, this is your computer speaking. Congrats on being able to recover your files from me earlier this week. I know I can be quite a nuisance sometimes, but believe you me, it’s not my fault! It’s faulty craftmanship, that’s all. And my story is staying that way.

Mwuhahahaha.

Signed,
Your friend,
PC

TWO-FACE’S SIDE OF THE COIN

Yeah, so my computer didn’t write that, or write tennis shoes. So? I needed to fill this space with something here. My hard drive ate the letter to me (ME!) that I was going to put in here for this issue!

Thank you, merciful technical muses, for bringing my computer back to life.

OK, that’s quite enough. Let’s move on with the newsletter now…

LITTLE FACTS AND BLOOPERS
(by Tim “TWO-FACE” Leighton)

Here is a section that just points out various little facts and bloopers that we have noticed while watching BTAS, STAS and BEYOND countless times. If you have anything to contribute, feel free to do so! Enjoy!

CONTRIBUTED BY STAFF:
1) In the BATMAN BEYOND episode “April Moon”, watch when we first meet the doctor in his house. During the opening pan shot of the scene, we see the framed photo of April on his nightstand beside his clock; however, when we pull back to see the whole room, the clock remains on the nightstand but the photo is gone!

2) A currently-airing Diet Coke commercial, I believe, features one of the lesser-recognized BTAS voice actors. Kimmy Robertson, the voice of Alice in MAD AS A HATTER and Margo at the very end of DISAPPEARING INQUE, appears as the blonde girl in the commercial that doesn’t say all too much. Listen carefully, though; I think that’s her.

CONTRIBUTED BY OTHERS:
Hey, it’s alright if you didn’t have anything this time. There’s only so much that we can find in these episodes. We need some new material!
