Batman: The Animated Newsletter
Weeks of October 22 – October 29, 2001
Volume 4, 2
Rated: PG (as with all other things Batman-related)

THIS ISSUE’S SUBLIMINAL MESSAGE: “HAPPY EARLY HALLOWE’EN, EVERYONE!”
____________________________________________________________________
NOTABLE

As most of you know by now, we at BATMAN: THE ANIMATED NEWSLETTER had some trouble with our computers two weeks back, and 1 barely made it out! But, in that two week interval, we somehow still managed to get another 100 subscribers, bringing our total up to over 2400!

Once again, thanks to everyone’s involvement and support of the newsletter. Trust me, this thing wouldn’t exist without you 2400 fine people!

EAGERLY ANTICIPATING…
New episodes are on the horizon! Here’s what we can expect in the near future…

-Due to the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington on Sept. 11th, just after our last issue came out, the KidsWB has reworked its schedules for this week. UNMASKED, the only unaired BATMAN BEYOND episode, didn’t air on Friday after all (because it involves Kobra, a terrorist group) and will air at a later date.

MOVIES
-ONSTAR is holding a contest where a winner gets to have a walk-on role in whatever the next Batman movie will be.

*BATMAN: YEAR ONE (BATMAN 5) NEWS:
-The reason why this production has been postponed for so long is because that with every rewrite of the script, Aronofsky and Miller have gone back to square one to start over. It will be made in time, though. Thanks to COMING SOON for the info.

*BATMAN BEYOND: LIVE ACTION NEWS:
-Apparently this movie is on indefinite hiatus because the futuristic environments needed in which to set the movie would cost a LOT to make. Thanks to COMING SOON for the info.

*BATMAN BEYOND: THE FOURTH ANIMATED MOVIE
-At the WIZARD WORLD convention, Paul Dini has confirmed that there will be more animated Bat-movies on the way. Aside from a second BATMAN BEYOND “Nightwing” film (which is always possible), there could possibly be movies featuring team-ups between Batman and Superman, Wonder Woman, Plastic Man, and Green Arrow. These ideas HAVE been greenlighted by the WB.

*CATWOMAN
-No new news on this movie for a while…but yeah, it’s still in production.

*WORLD’S FINEST
-No new news here. Don’t expect this movie to happen for quite a while. Development Hell, folks.

LIVE ACTION TELEVISION
-Nothing as of yet – though word has it a young Bruce Wayne MIGHT appear in a cameo on SMALLVILLE if the series stays in production.
-There are now rumours that if SMALLVILLE proves to be successful, the WB will be making a TV series based on Chuck Dixon’s BIRDS OF PREY comic series, featuring Oracle and Black Canary. Laeta Kalogridis (TOMB RAIDER) is attached as writer of the script and Mike Tollin, Brian Robbins, and Joe Davola are pegged as executive producers. This report has appeared in the HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. No sign on any other Bat-characters (including the B-man himself) appearing in the series as of yet.

EXCLUSIVE INTERNET ENDEAVOURS:
-New episodes are still coming out, on the following dates:
Oct. 9: #10 – “I’m Badgirl”

TOYS, BOOKS, AND OTHER MERCHANDISE
-BATMAN: VENGEANCE for PLAYSTATION 2, is due out this fall. Looks like a great game! Heck, even Matches Malone made it in! My only wish is that more of the heroes and villains made it in. Thus far, Batman, Batgirl, Gordon, Matches, Joker, Harley, Poison Ivy, and Mr. Freeze are the only characters revealed to definitely be in the game.
For a preview, go here. It has videos and stills, too!

COMIC REVIEWS
(BATMAN: GOTHAM ADVENTURES by Tim “TWO-FACE” Leighton)
(BATMAN BEYOND by Tim “TWO-FACE” Leighton)
(SUPERMAN ADVENTURES by Dick Grayson)

BATMAN: GOTHAM ADVENTURES
ISSUE: “Tuesday Night” (#42)
WRITTEN BY: Scott Peterson
PENCILS: Craig Rousseau
INKS: Dan Davis
COLOURIST: Lee Loughridge
LETTERER: Albert T. Deguzman
COVER ART: Bob Smith, Terry Beatty, and Lee Loughridge
ISSUED: September 5, 2001 (Cover date Nov 2001)
RATING: ***

What a Tuesday night. Even though I prefer good ol’ classic superhero vs supervillain story, I commend Scott Peterson on writing a tale focusing on a normal night of simple patrol for Batman and Robin. I’m writing this on the night of when the World Trade Centre was attacked (09-11), so I couldn’t help but draw the parrallels between that and the Dynamic Duo’s search and rescue efforts in a city ablaze in this issue.

Peterson’s minimal dialogue was great, but had it not been for the fabulous visuals by Craig Rousseau and Dan Davis, the issue wouldn’t have been nearly as effective. Fire is a beautiful (but deadly) thing, and this issue proved that on both counts.

I was hoping we’d get to see Firefly be the culprit rather than a computer glitch and sun flares, but just like the tragedy that befell in the U.S. (and the free world) today, sometimes grand-scale chaos comes from the faceless, the unknown.

Who knew that I’d ever get this much out of what I originally thought would be just a simple little fire-fighting tale. Kudos to everyone involved with .

Have a quiet, peaceful Tuesday Night everyone, wherever you may be.

COMIC SCHEDULES & COVERING THE BASICS

TALK ABOUT SERVICE! The price for any of these issues, unless otherwise posted, is $1.99 in the US and…grrrrr…a whopping $3.25 (or higher) in Canada. (Both our editors and many subscribers are Canadian, hence the well-deserved “grrr”.)

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Due to demand by some of our subscribers, we’ve decided to give a “Letters to the Editor” section a shot. Feel free to submit something you’d like to say to us, and each issue we’ll choose one to post and then reply to. (NOTE: It can be completely uncensored, positive OR negative, though any coarse language will be bleeped out. We want this to be a no-holds-barred column!)

* * * * * *

1. Will there be ANY way to see the Unmasked episode of Batman beyond? We don’t get Kid’sWB, but we do get Cartoon Network. I have read that Unmasked won’t be shown here – so what other option do we have?

2. Has anyone made available the writer’s guide for BB? I particularly want to know why Terri turned off his stealth mode so often…

-“lvirden”

* * * * * *

TWO-FACE’S SIDE OF THE COIN

Well, first off, I expect that UNMASKED, whenever and wherever it airs, will come with a great deal of fanfare – though the popularity of BATMAN BEYOND may have died nearly completely by then. Anyway, I’ve heard that, even though the KidsWB won’t officially carry BEYOND any longer, they still plan to air that one episode. As to whether the CARTOON NETWORK will air it, we really don’t know. There is also the outside chance that Canadian cable channel YTV might air it, as they apparently have rights to “all BATMAN BEYOND” episodes. It looks like we’ll just have to wait and see for any new information.

As for the overuse/underuse of Terry’s stealth mode on the Batsuit – you got me. It seems that the writers never really figured out how to use that thing right. I mean, it’s a great gimmick in some scenes, but then if used too long, they realize that it makes Terry too invincible and, therefore, that episode less enjoyable. The other side of the coin here is that anyone in the right mind fighting crime like that would WANT to be invincible – so why would he turn it off? Maybe it has certain limitations, I don’t know – it would have been nice to see the writers give us a little bit more information about his invisibility abilities.

Hmmm. And there’s a riddle none of us can answer.

BATMAN: THE ANIMATED TRIVIA
(by Tim “TWO-FACE” Leighton)

This is one of my favourite sections, where I get to boggle the minds of all our readers! (Mwuhahaha!) This trivia is all animated-related in some form, and can deal with ANY aspect of the show or comics based on the show. Remember, answer the questions WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF THE ANIMATED CONTINUITY. Now have fun – let’s see how well you do! Answers are provided below.

WHO WANTS TO BE A FILTHY-RICH MULTI-BILLIONAIRE?

Bruce Wayne’s not the only one. I’ll give you a hint, and you name the individual linked to these large sums of money.

626. According to Robin, the only man rich enough to hire Bane for his bidding.
627. He got ripped off by the Penguin for his “stash”, saying it was worth ten times Cobblepot’s offer.
628. Nearly got away with stealing untracable bonds from Wayne Enterprises.
629. Was attacked by a gaggle of women under the mistletoe.
630. Robbed the Gotham Mint for just a wee bit over $2 Million.
631. Never really tries to “destroy Gotham” in crime, but just has a penchant for pretty sparkly things.
632. She was well off, very popular – but that changed when she hit 30.
633. Acquired a phony inheritance from Boss Karlo (or whatever his name was)
634. Forgot a woman’s phone number after “registering the china”.
635. Is caught in the Janus Movie Theatre with the hopes of destroying it for money.
636. A winner on the “Lucky Day” game show.
637. He isn’t ever revealed to be wealthy, but if he runs a worldwide terrorist group called “The Society of Assassins”, he must be.
638. Is saddened by the fact that islands, even small ones, cost money.
639. Is apparently scared of the “I” word. (“In-gagement”).
640. The only man richer than Bruce Wayne in the DCU.

LITTLE FACTS AND BLOOPERS
(by Tim “TWO-FACE” Leighton)

Here is a section that just points out various little facts and bloopers that we have noticed while watching BTAS, STAS and BEYOND countless times. If you have anything to contribute, feel free to do so! Enjoy!

CONTRIBUTED BY STAFF:
1) Did you know that Michael Rosenbaum, the actor playing Lex Luthor on the new SMALLVILLE series, will also be providing a voice for the Flash on the JLA series?

2) Luthor’s father will be played by John Glover, who has two other Bat-related connections: he played Dr. Jason Woodrue in BATMAN & ROBIN (gag), and the Riddler on BTAS.

CONTRIBUTED BY OTHERS:
Hey, it’s alright if you didn’t have anything this time. There’s only so much that we can find in these episodes. We need some new material!
