THE CALL (Pt. 2)
Story by Paul Dini and Alan Burnett
Directed by Stan Berkowitz
Animation by Koko Enterprise Co., Ltd. and Dong Yang Animation Co., Ltd.
Original airdate: November 18, 2000
My rating: ***** (Out of five stars)

(For a review of PART ONE, check out BTAN #86.)

THE CALL Part 1 is summarized in a series of flashbacks ending with Bruce arming Terry (as Batman) with a special weapon needed to fight the JLU traitor. When Batman returns to the JLU Tower, he shows league members the Batplane’s recording of the battle during which Warhawk was lost in a massive explosion. The recording shows the traitor remotely detonating the missile that Warhawk is guiding into space. The JLU members are thunderstruck and unwilling to believe the evidence in the recording. Before the members get physical with Batman, Warhawk appears and convinces them that Batman is right in naming the traitor.

When confronted, the traitor attacks all the league members and a massive fight ensues. Batman attempts to use Bruce’s secret weapon on the renegade, but delays for a fraction of a second. Batman loses his opportunity to subdue the traitor and the traitor escapes. The remaining team members conclude that the quisling fled to a secret base and Batman, aided by Bruce, leads them there.

At the secret base, the team again takes on the traitor. This time, Batman does use the secret weapon to overpower the betrayer. Once the traitor is subdued, one of the league makes telepathic contact with the traitor and discovers the reason for his strange behavior. Can Batman and the remaining league handle the “real” enemy?

GOOD POINTS:

This story was based on silver age and later comic book story lines, including the original story in The Brave and the Bold #28 (which was reprinted in The Justice League of America #39 and The Justice League of America Archives, Volume 1). Later, the enemy appeared in The Crisis on Infinite Earths #9, and The Justice League of America #189, as well as in several Secret Files and Origins and Who’s Who in the DC Universe.

Of course, in this episode, it’s the Batman team of Terry and Bruce that wins the day, a variation on the original story. But in both story lines, it’s the non-metahuman that makes the difference, not the super-powers of the Justice League.

THE CALL Part 2 also featured a flashback from a previous animated episode that brought the comic book story into the animated series setting.

The fight scenes were well staged. Each combatant fought using his or her particular fighting style. Some of the fights were fought outside in various climates and also under water. These elements and scenes were also nicely rendered.

In one scene, Bruce asks why Terry delayed in using the special weapon on the traitor. Terry’s response is priceless. The camera quickly moves to Bruce, back in the Batcave, with the barest hint of a smile on his face.

Batman is treated like a kid and an amateur by the JLU, pretty much the same way that Bruce treated and sometimes still treats him. Even the child Green Lantern seems to be more experienced than this Batman is, as is evidenced in the scene involving little blue pellets.

The last scene in the episode has Superman offering Batman a permanent place in the JLU. Barda chimes in that it would put this Batman one up on the original, since he was generally a part-time member only. Superman adds that the previous Batman was never really much of a joiner. Then Batman walks away saying “Maybe he and I have something in common after all.” Superman smiles and responds “More than you think, son. More than you think.”

BAD POINTS:

Unfortunately, no additional information was given on the backgrounds of any of the JLU members. Time constraints and the fact that those details were not integral to the story provide the justification for this omission. Perhaps in a future Batman Beyond episode (sadly, highly unlikely!) or a future Batman Beyond comic story (please!), this information could be supplied.

While not really a bad point, one issue must be addressed. A few comments have been seen on various boards and newsgroups about the contrived nature of having Superman call on Batman to find the traitor. Having an outsider investigate a problem within the JLU made good sense. Even the traitor would have valued Batman’s detective, planning, and attack skills and bringing him over to the “bad guys” would have seriously crippled any resistance the JLU could mount.

While the point could be made that the JLU didn’t mount much resistance to the villain once discovered, that too, is part of the original story.

Finally, apologies if this review was so vague as to be vacuous, any more detailed information would have severely spoiled the story and revealed the identity of the villain for those that haven’t watched it yet. For those that have, it is hoped that having watched the episode, the somewhat veiled comments made here would be understood.

EDITORIAL
(by Marc Rosenzweig)

First, a short bio on a certain man we’ve all grown to love, provided by the folks at DC Comics and Warner Brothers:

‘At age 17 Kevin Conroy earned a full scholarship to Julliard’s Drama Division. After graduation, he toured for one year with his former Julliard teacher John Houseman, and the Houseman’s Acting group before movie on to act in the national production of “Deathtrap.” Soon after, he decided to explore television and was immediately cast in the daytime soap opera “Another World”. It wasn’t long, however, before Conroy was back on stage performing in the Broadway productions of “Eastern Standard”, “Lolita” and “Hamlet”.

In 1985, Conroy returned to television in the daytime drama “Search for Tomorrow”. Shortly after, he won several roles in popular TV shows including “Dynasty”, “O’Hara” and “Tour of Duty”. In 1990, he starred in the telefilm “Killer Instinct” and played Ted Kennedy in the mini-series “Kennedy”. Other TV film credits include “Island City”, “Chain of Desire” and “Face of Fear”.’

Of course, his most popular role was yet to come…

On October 24, 1999, Marc Rosenzweig managed to pull Kevin Conroy, the voice of Batman himself, aside at a WB Store signing session to ask him a few questions. This interview has not appeared anywhere since, this is NOT a reprint. It’s 100% original stuff! (Just to set the stage so you will understand when this happened, BTAS had just been “cancelled”, and BATMAN BEYOND had just started its second season.)

So, without further adieu, the long-awaited interview will now commence!

PS – Check out for an editorial by Robyn Johnson, also about meeting Kevin Conroy at a WB store.

INTERVIEW WITH THE MAIN MAN HIMSELF, KEVIN CONROY

MARC: In your personal opinion, do you like the new look or the old look better? The original
animated series or the harder, more angular-

KEVIN: In the old Batman, not BATMAN BEYOND?

MARC: No, not BATMAN BEYOND.

KEVIN: I like the older feel of the show, I think most of the audience does, too. I hear that – when I go to these signing things, and I do a number of these every year and I hear that virtually everybody [perfers the old style]. I’m not sure why they did change the look, to tell you the truth, but I don’t hear a lot of positive response about it.

MARC: OK. What was your prior knowledge or history of Batman, before you became the voice?

KEVIN: Y’know, I didn’t have a lot of background knowledge on it, which I think is why I got it. I had no preconcieved notions at all. I had vague exposure to the Adam West series, but that wasn’t Batman – not really, that wasn’t the Dark Knight, certainly.

MARC: No!

KEVIN: So when I went in, they had to explain the whole thin to me. “We know you have a theatre background, and we know you don’t know a lot about Batman. His parents have been killed – he’s avenging their death – he’s absurd, he lives in a cave, no one knows about this double life he’s leading, do you think you could handle it?” That’s the way I related to it. The voice was entirely mine, I just starting doing the sound – and as I started doing the sound, I saw all the crew running around back and forth. We had either blown a fuse, there was a fire in there, or I was doing something really right out here. *laughs* And as it turned out, they came running out and said, “That’s it! You’re it! That’s it – we’ve been looking at hundreds of people and finally found the guy, you’re it!” So, it was quite a fluke.

MARC: When you do the voice and you have to, like, actually get down in yourself to find emotion, what’s your motivation when you do that?

KEVIN: It’s just acting. I mean, a lot of the guests who come on the show, as you probably notice from the credits, are really good actors – very good actors. Most of them have never done animation before – a lot of them – and they’re always shocked at the performance quality that goes on in the recording studio. Invariably, they say, “You know, you’re really acting up a storm in here.” I mean, you can hear it in the show. So that’s part of why the quality is so high. Bruce [Timm] and Paul [Dini] really said that – they always credit the actors with helping make the show the best it is.

MARC: Mark Hamill is-

KEVIN: Just an awesome performer. He’s very underappreciated, he really is. I watch him work and play off of people. In the new show, the reputation of the old show was such that on the new show, they could get anyone they want. They got Stockard Channing [Barbara Gordon on BATMAN BEYOND] on that show! Anyone in town would do that show, because it’s a covetted thing to do now.

MARC: Kind of like it was back in the 60’s when Adam West and Burt Ward were in the cape and cowl, too.

KEVIN: Exactly! Everyone was trying to get on that show.

MARC: You mentioned earlier your favourite episode was “Perchance to Dream”.

KEVIN: I just like that episode because it was very film noirish, it was very dark. Different people have different preferences for different episodes depending on what they’re looking at. Artists tend to look at certain episodes as their favourite because the art is so extraordinairy. I tend to look at certain episodes as my favourite because the acting challenge is more, and in “Perchance to Dream”, I had a chance to do so many different characterizations of the same man, who all have to be believably the same guy, but all have to be slightly different, because he was at different stages of being drugged. So, that’s really challenging, to really clearly delineate what drug he’s on, how influenced he is, and yet he’s the same person, and YET it’s not my voice. For me, it was really fulfilling to, at the end of the day, hear them go, “that was amazing, you were all over the place today and totally believable, and we’re so happy you have this job.” Every time I see that episode, I remember that. Y’know, it’s a nice experience to remember. There are other episodes were the art might be more lush or glorious, some people might prefer other episodes. From an actor’s point of view, I just enjoy doing that.

MARC: Who’s your favourite villain or villainess that you’ve worked with?

KEVIN: Well, I have to say Mark, hands down. He’s just such a good actor. To watch him perform…I wish more people could see him actually perform, because – all of us sit down. It’s a long booking. All of us get tired. Mark never sits down. He can’t contain himself. He’s so into doing the Joker that his veins start to bulge out of his neck. He starts sweating. He has to loosen his shirt. He starts turning red. You see the sweat coming through his shirt…I mean, he just BECOMES the Joker. When he starts laughing hysterically, people – there are visitors in the recording booth, sometimes – invariably, you look in there and see them like this (shocked) watching this guy, because it’s shocking to see what happens to his face when he does Joker. He just goes somewhere else, mentally, and he can do it over and over again, for hours. And that’s a real talent. I love working with him. There have been many wonderful voices on this show.

MARC: Now, in terms of your own personal career, how much longer do you expect to be doing BATMAN, BATMAN BEYOND…are you in talks to bring back the old series?

KEVIN: There isn’t. I really doubt if there will be any more of the old show. I don’t even know how much longer Bruce Wayne will be in the new show, to tell you the truth, because he’s very old. I think they’ve used the character to segue into this new young Batman. I’ve been doing it since ’91, and we’ve been on the air since ’92 – that’s an unprecedented length of time to be doing an animated character, so it’s been a long run for me. I would love to continue doing it, and I know the audience likes what I do with it, and the creators like what I do with it. I hope it continues, but if it doesn’t, it doesn’t, and it’s still been a great run.

MARC: Now, with the voice-overs and the animation aspect of things, have you done anything else besides Batman at this time?

KEVIN: I’ve done some CAPTAIN PLANET for Hanna Barbara…I do more commercial voice-overs, like I said, my career was really geared towards theatre…I did a series called TOUR OF DUTY, a Vietnam show, and I had a sitcom on for a while. Most of my work had been in theatre in New York.

MARC: So you were originally from Long Island…

KEVIN: I was born in Westbury, Long Island. I went to St. Bridgette, we moved to Connecticut when I was about 11, so I grew up the second half of my childhood in Connecticut, and then I lived in New York from 17 til my early 30’s. I lived in New York most of my life.

MARC: Of the live-action movies you’ve seen, which is your favourite?

KEVIN: I don’t think they compare to the animated show. I don’t think it was ever meant to be a live-action show.

MARC: No, it wasn’t, but in your own personal opinion, is there anything about the live-action stuff that you personally like? Or do you not even watch the movies?

KEVIN: I don’t like the movies. I don’t think they’re very good, and I don’t think they were ever intended to be…I think it was a mistake to make them, personally. It’s an animated show, it’s all in the imagination. There are certain things you can only do with animation, know what I mean? In live-action you’re so restricted, even with the incredible technical feats they can do with moviemaking, they’re still in a very concrete, tangable world , know what I mean? In animation, it’s art – you’re in an art world, and you can do anything you want.

MARC: Like the original Batman in the comic book.

KEVIN: And there is Batman in the comic, and it’s from that world. It’s just never translated right, no matter how much money they spent on it, and I don’t think it was anyone’s fault. They had great, talented people doing them – it was just never intended to be that way. Personally, I just don’t think they ever got it.

MARC: With the episode “Beware the Grey Ghost”, you obviously got a chance to meet Adam West.

KEVIN: Yes, what a gentleman. What a gentleman. He was very, very classy. That’s a whole episode that we did together and he did a wonderful performance. I was a little…well, not nervous, but I was afraid that it might be a little awkward because I was sort of, you know, treading on his territory, so to speak. But he was very cool about it…”No no, I had a great run with the show and it’s your turn now, and you’re doing a great job with it, and have fun.” It’s sort of the way I’ve been with Will Friedle now, who’s doing the younger Batman – it’s his turn to play with it, now.

MARC: Now to segue into that, what’s your personal take on BATMAN BEYOND?

KEVIN: It’s hard…I think it’s beautifully done, it’s more like an MTV video. I always think of an MTV video when I see it. Its very hard angles, its fast cuts, its fast music, it’s fast-paced, it’s…MTV! I know that’s the audience they want to appeal to, and if that’s what they want to go for, then they’ve done a really good job. I think it’s incredibly well-done, it’s a wonderful cast, it’s well-written – it’s just a totally different show. It’s tough to compare them, it’s like apples and oranges.

MARC: It is.

KEVIN: It’s just the same franchise, that’s the only thing that’s similar. It’s just totally a
different show – and I love the old show. So, how do you compare? I can’t compare, they’re
completely different. The new show is a wonderful show, it’s just completely different.

MARC: As far as the treatment of Bruce Wayne, the character, aging him…

KEVIN: Brutal, isn’t it?

MARC: I mean, putting him in this geriatric state where he actually goes off into seclusion, what are your personal feelings on that?

KEVIN: I feel that aging Bruce Wayne is an interesting way to have the character evolve. I think that it would have been really interesting if they had kept him lighter and powerful. Even though he’s old, he’s still a legitimate force to be dealt with. I think that would be unique and interesting, and more of a bow to the older audience. This show has a very wide demographic, and I think it would be great to see a senior citizen who could kick some ass. *laughs*

MARC: You have done a few episodes with that…

KEVIN: Yes, they’ve hinted at it, but they’ve never gone there, completely. I think it would be fascinating to really have him back in the costume – we did do one episode. I think that would be very legitimate and very cool if they would do that – sort of a bow to the audience.

MARC: They actually touch upon that in the last comic book [BATMAN BEYOND #1 (ongoing)], I don’t know if you’ve had a chance to see DC’s version.

KEVIN: No I didn’t…

MARC: Bruce Wayne puts on the costume again, the old costume, and goes after Terry McGinness – if you get a chance you should pick it up. It’s a new BATMAN BEYOND animated comic book series.

OTHER GUY: Can you say a few words about working with Arleen Sorkin?

KEVIN: I love Arleen, I love Harley. The other half to the success of Mark Hamill is the incredible performance of Arleen Sorkin – the two of them interacting is phenomenal. She’s a dream to work with, she’s a very talented actress, and when the two of them interact, they go off on tangents together. It’s hysterical to watch them take off.

In fact, Mark and I did a QBC radio promo years ago where they were selling Batman posters that we had signed, and nothing was going on for the first few minutes. Then we started doing the voice, we started interacting together as Batman and the Joker, and they said the switchboard lit up like a Christmas tree, the audience went crazy, and they sold out in three minutes – hundreds of these things!

So, when the interaction happens between the actors, real magic happens. With Mark and Arleen, that happens every time they get together. She’s phenomenal – the audience responds so well to her because she brings so much to it. She’s great.

MARC: The character of Harley Quinn was strictly created for the animated series.

KEVIN: Yes – and for her. She was in mind [when Paul Dini created her].

MARC: Can you do a Batman impression for us?

KEVIN: I am vengance. I am the night. I – AM – BATMAN!

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Due to demand by some of our subscribers, we’ve decided to give a “Letters to the Editor” section a shot. Feel free to submit something you’d like to say to us, and each issue we’ll choose one to post and then reply to. (NOTE: It can be completely uncensored, positive OR negative, though any coarse language will be bleeped out. We want this to be a no-holds-barred column!)

* * * * * *

I have to say that I agree 100% with last issue’s editorial about the “decline of GOTHAM ADVENTURES”. If Rick Burchett won’t return, then bring back Craig Rousseau (my favourite, anyway) to GOTHAM ADVENTURES. I think Tim Levins would be better suited to BATMAN BEYOND. Rousseau did a great job the few issues he was there and I believe I read that he wants to come back.

TWO-FACE’S SIDE OF THE COIN

You raise a good point, Kevin. I still think that Rick Burchett was one of the best things to come out of the animated Bat-books, and wish that he was still around. Unfortunately, he has moved on, but still within the realms of the Bat-universe. (Go check out the HUNTRESS: CRY FOR BLOOD miniseries that he and Greg Rucka worked on. It’s great!)

I am perfectly happy with the way things are on the two series’, artistically speaking. Craig Rousseau is doing a great job on BATMAN BEYOND – he has a knack for the harder angles used on that show – and Tim Levins is a perfect fit for GOTHAM ADVENTURES. That said, since both of these people are so talented, it would be interesting to see them switch jobs every now and again, just to mix it up a little.

I know both Craig Rousseau and Tim Levins read this newsletter, so what do you guys say? Could anything like this happen in the future, mayhaps? I think that it would be a very interesting crossover experiment, personally – because as they are both working for “animated” comic books, there are subtle differences in their styles.

Hmmmm…now I have all these ideas floating in MY head…

‘RETURN OF THE JOKER’ GIVEAWAY

WE NOW HAVE REVISED RULES! READ BELOW FOR MORE!

In trying to get people both more involved with the newsletter AND want to help them out at the same time, we’re offering anyone that participates in our NO MAN’S ISLAND column a chance to win unedited copies of RETURN OF THE JOKER.

The way it works is as follows: vote for the two characters you’d like to vote off the island. Of the characters that are being cast off or even nominated in that particular issue, we will randomly select one of these characters for our contest. Anyone who voted for this character will be entered into a draw, according to the e-mail address from which their ballot was recieved. Every issue, we will randomly select one e-mail address (from a hat, to make it fair) and that participant, if willing, wins a copy of the unedited movie!

You may vote for NO MAN’S ISLAND as often as you like, and are eligible to win once within each round.

If the selected winner for whatever reason declines, the will be another draw for that same week. The catch? The winner, if agreeing, must provide a tape and enough money to cover postage ($5 American) of the tape to and from their place of residence. There will be no extra profit for us at BATMAN: THE ANIMATED NEWSLETTER (as that would be illegal) or anything. We just want to get this movie out to more people as it’s not going to be definately released on tape just yet.

NOTE: I am not promoting the act of bootlegging videos for profit, I am merely looking for the cost of the tape and postage, so fans will be able to view the movie as it was supposed to be.

That said, let’s get voting! (And make sure to read the NO MAN’S ISLAND section below.)

NO MAN’S ISLAND
ROUND FIFTEEN
(the SURVIVOR rip-off…erm…homage)
(by Tim “TWO-FACE” Leighton)

Commissioner Gordon was declared official loser last week when Montoya and his own daughter were eliminated from the game before his very eyes. All the remaining villains seem to have Gotham in their grasp, and the Batsquad is slowly being picked off, one by one…

…A WALTZ DOWN MEMORY LANE…

A WORD FROM THE CAST-AWAYS:
BATGIRL: “I failed you, Bruce, father…and Dick, well…I was planning on breaking up with you anyways, sooooo this just makes THAT a lot easier now…”
RENE MONTOYA: “I’m just baffled that I made it THIS long. I really am. I never realized I was such a fan-favourite.”

* * * * * * * * * *

Commissioner Gordon rested uneasily on his knees between the unconscious body of Rene Montoya and the brutally murdered body of his daughter, weeping in pain. The Joker, Two-Face, Mr. Freeze, and Robin had been gone about two minutes when Batman showed up. He swooped down from the rooftop above after surveying the scene. What could he say?

“Jim…”

Gordon looked up sadly at Batman, looming over him. “You never told me she was my daughter.” Batman lowered his head and took a step back, about to apologize, but he was promptly cut off by his friend. “My daughter!” He then pointed over to Montoya. “Do you have any idea what it’s like to lose a loved one, let alone two, right before your eyes AT THE SAME TIME?”

Batman nodded. “Yes, I do. I’m sorry.” He walked over to Montoya; apologies could wait a moment. He pressed his fingers under her jaw to check her pulse. “She’s still alive. Get her to the mainland immediately.” Gordon scowled; though Batman was right, he was in no mood to be ordered around.

Gordon moved over to his daughter’s body, pulled the cape away from her neck and draped it over her face. He sighed in agony and looked over to Batman. “Harvey knew. Even the damned Joker knew. Why didn’t I?”

Batman spun around to face Gordon after inspecting Montoya’s body. “What did you say?”

Gordon was about to cry again. “You never tell me anything about yourself. Not that I want to know, but to think that you shared this with the Joker and Harvey and…” Batman’s heart dropped into his stomach; this was not good.

“I said no such thing.”

Gordon got up and rubbed the fog from the insides of his glasses. “Then your ‘friend’ Tim did.”

Batman growled – he was angry, but didn’t know who was to blame.

Nightwing showed up a moment later. “I got here as soon as I could, Batman – I have something to report about Ivy…” He stepped back and shook when he saw the scene on the street below him. “Oh man…” he jumped down to street level for a closer look. “Barbara…”

Batman looked past Gordon to Nightwing, somberly. After a moment, he responded. “Dick,” he said, purposely revealing his identity, “what is it you have to report?”

Nightwing crouched down over the bodies and cried within his throat. “It doesn’t matter.” He sniffled. “Montoya, too?” He growled. “Who??…”

“Joker, Two-Face, they both did.” He then switched modes. “Get Montoya to the mainland, she’ll make it,” Batman ordered. “I have to show the Commissioner something.” Gordon looked at Batman with a shocked but potentially happy glance; Batman walked forward and Gordon chugged along beside him.

Nightwing scowled as Batman walked away; what was going on in his mind? Why was he acting so heartless? Argh. He moved Batgirl’s body off of the street and into the shadows, he kissed her forehead through the cape draped over her head and murmurred. “I’ll be back for you.” He then moved over to Montoya, picked her up in his arms, and ran to the waterfront to get her to safety.

Poison Ivy stretched across her bed – a tuffet of really soft fluffy grass – letting out a little moan. Hmm. 1:30am, the clock read. She rolled over and moved her arm to the side; ugh, alone again. Why won’t Harley ever learn to be free? “Harley! Harley, where are you?” she called.

“I’m…over here, Red…” Harley stammered shyly.

“Why are you hiding?” Ivy cooed as she cautiously moved over to her playmate.

“Because, Red…I know we’re friends and all but…I just don’t want to do that with you. Ever.”

“What?”

“THAT.”

Ivy sighed and growled. “God, Harley, when will you ever learn?” She looked out the window across the open urban expanse of Gotham City to the north of her. “There’s only eleven of us left on this island – can’t be too difficult to win this game now, eh, Harley?”

“Whatever,” Harley moped. At least Ivy was done with her flirtations – that just seemed so…wrong. Like, what if kids were watching?

With a flick of her wrist, Ivy’s jungle surged northward, carrying her mobile botanical home with it; this game wouldn’t be over until all of Gotham was in Mother Nature’s grasp. Harley sat on the ‘window sil’ – well, what passed as one – and stared down at the ground passing by, a number of storeys below; a flash of purple could be seen through the vines. “What?” she looked intently, gazing curiously where she thought she saw the flash of colour; could it be? “Mistah J? Are…you coming to save me?” She squealed in glee in spite of herself.

“What was that, Harl?” Ivy queried as she looked back over her shoulder.

“Uh, nuthin’, Red…just thinking of a joke I heard on Late Night Gotham Live a while back…hee hee…”

“Whatever.” Ivy tossed her hair aside and looked back down upon the city in her grasp. Nothing could stop her now.

As the Joker ran through the vines and sprawling botanical life forms, heading for the weapons cache Two-Face promised him at City Hall, he didn’t even think for a moment that Harley may be in there with Ivy, somewhere. He honestly couldn’t care less. He didn’t need her at all. No, not at all. Just him and Batman – I mean, Bruce. Just them. That’s all he’d need to be happy. Oh, his heart was aflutter just thinking about the possibility.

Catwoman swooped down from a skyscraper towering over the maze of plant life that covered Ivy’s massive territory. She flicked her wrist and swung out her whip; it caught onto one of the stray vines and carried her along. Yes, that was the perfect plan. Take down Ivy and Quinn and she’d be the only woman left on the island until this game was over. She’d have Batman all to herself. Just her and Batman. That’s all she’d need to be happy. Oh, her heart was aflutter just thinking about the possibility.

Mr. Freeze aimed his arm in the direction of a dumpster hidden under a pile of trash. “There.”

“That’s IT?” Two-Face spat. He was expecting something a little more glorious – or plain – not something like THIS. “THAT’S the way into the cave?”

“It’s A way,” Freeze said. He walked over to the dumpster and slowly rolled it out of the way; Two-Face stepped forward, Robin still bound, gagged, and slung over his shoulder, kicking the bags of trash out of the way. “Let’s go, Mister Dent.” Mr. Freeze stepped into the tunnel carefully carved out of the side of the building.

Two-Face cocked one eyebrow and looked over his shoulder at Robin. “Seems a little too easy, Timmy. I never took your boss for the trusting type.” He cautiously stepped into the tunnel; Freeze moved behind him and rolled the dumpster back into place. They didn’t want to let on that they’d discovered his secret hideout, would they?

“So Victor, level with me here,” Two-Face went on, trying to make conversation. It was lonely in this dark tunnel. Really, lonely – no sign of an end. He was forunate enough that Freeze’s suit provided enough of a glow to illuminate at least their immediate surroundings. “Why did you start workin’ for the Bat anyway?”

After a pause, Freeze gave in. He didn’t want to talk, but he might as well. Dent didn’t seem nearly as two-faced as his name made him out to be, so it would be OK to open up to him – slightly. “He has my wife.”

“I know, I know. But why?”

Another pause. “He took her from my lab before this contest and used her as a bargaining chip to get me to join. How could I refuse?”

“But he has a whole farm team at his disposal, I’ve met ’em all. Why you?” He thought a moment. “Just to mix things up a little, I guess, eh?” Freeze nodded solemnly. “Must be one special woman,” he spoke. It was Harvey speaking this time.

“Have you ever been in love?” Freeze queried.

Two-Face sighed; wow, this tunnel just kept getting longer. “Yeah, once. Actually, twice. Pam doesn’t really count, though. Just Grace, my fiance.”

“I remember her from the papers.” Freeze couldn’t believe he was opening up to this guy. “Right around the election. I voted for you two times.”

Two-Face grinned as a memory popped into half of his mind. “I trust it was in two seperate elections.” He looked at Victor; now reaction. He turned back to Robin. “Hey, come on bird boy, that was funny!” Geez, no laughter at all. Maybe it wasn’t.

The two walked a moment before Freeze spoke up first; that caught Two-Face off-guard. “I like you, Dent. But don’t get in my way or you will pay. Just as nothing gets between you and your coin, nothing gets between my wife and I. Nothing.”

Two-Face nodded, half smiling, half scowling. “You really love her, eh?”

“Yes,” Freeze gushed emotionlessly as they continued to walk into the darkness. “She’s the only one that makes me feel warm inside.”

* * * * * * * * * *

AND AFTER A FIFTEENTH ROUND OF VOTING…

“Oh, BABY!!!!” the Joker rejoiced. He stood on the threshold of the end of the apocalypse. This was purely orgasmic!!! The Joker entered Harvey Dent’s secret room at City Hall, wading through his weapons’ cache, his face positively gleeful. “Oh, callou caleigh!” He ran all over the room, hugging and kissing. “Ohhhh, grenades, tommy guns, C4, plastic explosives, chemical weapons, and fireworks for afterwards! This is a dream come true! Manna from heaven!” He let out a joyous laugh, echoing throughout the building. “Now…the REAL game begins!” He laughed again and then quickly stopped; he hit his forehead and spat. “Damnit, I shoulda brought a wheelbarrow.”

After a long trek northward through Gotham, Batman escorted Gordon into an alleyway. The two hadn’t spoken during the whole journey. Gordon finally spoke up after Batman led him off of the main thoroughfare. “Where are you taking me?” Batman gasped; someone had been here. Trash bags littered the alleyway – this was not how he left it earlier that evening. The dumpster, upon closer inspection, was off kilter, too. Batman ran to the dumpster and slowly pushed it out of the way just enough to squeeze behind it.

“Come on,” he shouted, waving Gordon into the tunnel behind the dumpster along with him. Gordon ran over and looked down into the dark corridor; Batman was running now, away from his friend.

“Hey, wait up!” Gordon shouted; he reached into his pocket, retrieved a lighter, and flickered it on. He then chased after his friend, making sure he didn’t lose him.

Poison Ivy continued to move northward, taking block by city block with a mere wave of her hand; watching the weak buildings crumble and explode as her vines squeezed them apart was a sight of sheer joy! If only her travelling buddy was having such a good time, too. “Hey Harley, get over here, come see this.” Harley remained silent, looking out another corner of Ivy’s hideaway at the industrial district passing below. “Hello?” She spun around and stared at Harley, sighing. “What’s up, you don’t seem your usual perky self this morning.”

Harley stared out the window with tired eyes. “I’m tired, Red – I should still see in bed.” Ivy’s ears perked up. “NO, I mean, I’m still not feelin’ well…” She cautiously covered her mouth as her stomach churned – just in case. “And all this motion is making me a little woozy.”

Ivy walked over to Harley and wrapped an arm around her shoulders, patting her back. “Awwww, poor baby…” She patted her a little harder, hoping it’ll wake her up. “Now snap out of it, cuz I need the both of us for this.” Harley looked up and her with a sickly expression on her face. “To celebrate afterwards, I mean.” Geez, not that again.

“Red, please stop – you know I luv ya but not like that, so please give it a rest.” She stared dreamily out the window – where was that flash of purple she saw earlier?

“Fine,” Ivy spat.

Harley groaned, as if in teen-angst. “Mistah J…” The very two words that angered Ivy more than anything; hopefully she didn’t hear that. “Bye, Red – I hope you take over the world and ev’rythin’, but I’ve gotta go.”

“WHAT?” Harley slinked out the window before she answered Ivy; Ivy ran over to the window and growled. “You’re not getting away THAT easily…” She aimed her hand at her and sent a large leafy appendage to grab her; Harley evaded that with a simple flip. Ivy tried again, and again, and again; Harley finally made her way down to the ground and hid. “Geez, there is something seriously wrong with that girl.”

“Maybe she needs a better role-model.” Ivy spun around to stand face to face with Catwoman. They both hissed; Catwoman lept at her foe and…

“Whoa…” Two-Face gasped as he stepped into the open underground expanse. He’d heard rumours of this place for years, now. Look at all this stuff – computers, vaults, training centres, labs, the CAR…he had to hand it to Batman. This place rocked. “Welcome home, Robin,” he commented with a sneer.

“Hurry, we cannot spare a single second,” Freeze mentioned as he walked into the room without a degree of caution, as if he owned the place. Two-Face humbly followed him across a narrow catwalk hundreds of metres above the crashing tides of the ocean below. As they continued to walk across the various elevated platforms, he could swear that he could hear the tinny chimes of a music box drifting throughout the cave.

“And you’re sure Batman isn’t around, right?” Two-Face said nervously, clutching to his Boy Hostage, his bargaining chip with the Dark Knight.

“Yes…but we’re not alone.” Freeze aimed his gun in the direction of the Batcomputer and fired; the screen shattered and the entire console was shielded under a layer of ice. “I heard you from a mile away, Mister Pennyworth. Show yourself now or I swear my aim will be better next time.”

Two-Face thought, cocking an eye. Pennyworth? No…it can’t be Bruce’s butler…could it?

No one seemed to listen to Freeze’s command, so he fired again; Alfred dove from behind the computer to a small cavern in the rock walls; for someone so old, he was pretty nimble. Freeze aimed again – he had a clear shot; Alfred put up his hands in surrender. “Victor, don’t!” That’s better. “What are you DOING? You’re breaking your truce with-”

“HE broke his truce with ME,” Freeze reinstated. “I just want my wife, nothing more.” He walked past Alfred and up a short flight of stairs past the cases in which all of the Bat-costumes were kept.

Alfred watched him walk by and wiped his brow free of perspiration, breathing a sigh of relief. “Here,” a voice above him spoke in a low, gravelly tone, “I think you lost this.” Alfred looked up just in time to see Two-Face, looming above him, drop Robin to the ground uncaringly.

“Harvey, I-” Alfred gasped, casting fleeting glances at Robin – he was still breathing, thank God.

“Forget it, no thanks are necessary. Besides, we have other things to catch up on.” He swiftly kicked Alfred in the chest and sent him sprawling across the ground.

Catwoman collided with Ivy and pushed her into the ground; Ivy swung at Catwoman with a growl and a hiss. She wouldn’t have her dreams crushed now! “Fool – you’ll kill us BOTH!” Ivy shouted amidst the ruccus. She grabbed Catwoman around the waist and hoisted her out of the window; she shot a poison green arrow after her but Selina managed to evade it and fell out of sight. Ivy lurched forward to see where her foe had fallen, but Catwoman promptly swung back up and planted her feet squarely in the back.

“WHY are you DOING this?” Ivy bellowed, jumping on Catwoman’s body, knocking her to the ground.

“The Iceburg Lounge, don’t you remember?” Catwoman flipped her off of her body and took a step back. “You nearly killed me. And the less women there are on this island, the better.”

Ivy pointed her crossbow at her foe. “It’s nice to see we can agree on something,” she quipped. Catwoman ran at her, but Ivy flipped out of the way; Catwoman tumbled out the window again, but swung around on her whip and hit Ivy, knocking her out of the window again, falling to the ground in the industrial district far below.

Ivy was caught by one of her vines and was brought back up to Catwoman’s level. Catwoman growled and slashed at the vines with her claws; Ivy just laughed as her protective fauna kept growing around her. Catwoman snapped her whip at her and it grabbed Ivy around the neck; as the vines changed their position, Catwoman lost her footing and tumbled towards the open vats of chemical herbicide her far below; Ivy fell over the edge as well, and the two women tumbled through the sky and through a skylight, where Catwoman grabbed onto a catwalk to hold save herself. She let go of the whip and watched Ivy slam into the surface of the liquid and sink into the vat. She wasn’t sure if it killed her, but at least it got her out of her hair for a while. “Phew…” Catwoman sighed.

“PUDDIN’!!!! I KNEW IT WAS YOU!!!” Harley rejoiced as she entered City Hall; the Joker was making his way out of the district attorney’s chamber, his arms full of weaponry and ammunition. He almost looked like a pasty-faced Rambo. “I KNEW YOU’D COME BACK TO FIND ME!”

“Harley…?” the Joker gasped; geez, this girl was like a bad penny.

Harley jumped into his arms; the Joker accidentally dropped a large amount of his belongings onto the ground to make room for Harley’s body. “I’m sorry I wasn’t here, puddin’ – Red came and got me.” She pecked a kiss on his cheek.

“Uhh, yeah…I’m happy…too…? I’m just so happy that you’re alive!!!” the Joker sighed. Geez…now his whole plan would have to be revamped to make use of this girl. She was too valuable of a resource to toss aside.

“All those weeks of you ‘aiding’ me, chatting with me, soothing me – you were just SPYING on me for the Bat, weren’t you?” Two-Face hollered; Alfred had managed to get up and place a table in between them, to keep Harvey away from him.

“NO!” Alfred retorted; he wouldn’t back down, he wouldn’t play victim. “I was genuinely concerned.”

“No you weren’t, you’re just the Bat’s puppet, I know it.” Two-Face tossed the table in Alfred’s direction; Alfred ran out of the way and made his way to the weapons vault. Two-Face kept in tow.

“Mister Dent,” Freeze groaned with his distorted voice, hearing the commotion errupting behind him. “Leave him be, and come over here.” He walked up a small metal staircase onto another rocky platform hidden behind the wall against which the Batcomputer rested; he made his way through the glowing blue hues and stared at the glass tube in which his wife was encased. A small music box, which Freeze had left there earlier to keep his wife company, chimed away, slowly. “I’ve finally returned for you,” he said, stroking his gloved fingers over the glass.

Two-Face pulled out his gun and aimed it at Alfred and fired; he ducked into the vault, evading the blast. Two-Face cussed inwardly – and did it again when Alfred emerged from the vault with a large black gun in his hand, not unlike Freeze’s. “Stay away from me for a moment and LISTEN,” Alfred pleaded, “you have too much good in you to-”

Two-Face cut him off quickly. “Don’t give me that, you’re not my psychiatrist.” He stayed still – the ol’ man was packin’ heat.

“Please, just leave.”

Two-Face shook his head. He reached into his pocket and presented his coin. “You must know how this works by now, Al.” He gave it a flip; Alfred clutched his gun extra tight, just in case the results weren’t in his favour. The coin landed in Two-Face’s palm, and he grinned when he presented it to Alfred. “Tsk tsk, sorry, but rules are rules.” He was about to fire when Alfred beat him to it; he pulled on the trigger and a burst of flame (obviously part of Batman’s ‘fire proof’ suit ensemble) shot out in Two-Face’s direction. He dove out of the way, still managing to get a stray bullet in the air. In a true act of cowardice, he ran in Freeze’s direction. “Yo! Freeze! Li’l help!”

“HARRR-VEYYYY!”

Ohhhh crap, Two-Face thought. That was Batman’s voice – he doubled his speed.

Freeze turned around; this was not going according to plan, not at all. He walked back towards the platform that overlooked the rest of the cave and sighed; Two-Face collided into him. “GET THEM!” he ordered. Freeze looked past him and fired; he hit the Batmobile pretty easily, but neither Batman nor Alfred nor…geez, now Gordon was here, too? Argh…he didn’t manage to hit any of them.

Two-Face tried to escape but Batman swooped down from the shadows above and collided into him, knocking him back into the craggly rockface. “Don’t move a muscle.” Freeze quickly moved over and slugged him in the head; Batman fell forward and spun around to tackle Freeze, which he did, but then Two-Face tag-teamed him by managing to kick him in the leg. He drew his gun, aimed it at Batman’s head point-blank and cocked it; Batman heard the noise and swung his hand behind his head, knocking the gun to the ground.

Gordon had just finished up checking to see if Alfred and Robin were alright before charging over in Batman’s direction; first discovering the Batcave, then Batman’s identity, and then a full-blown war errupting on his own turf? This was a little too much to handle.

Two-Face dove to the ground to grab his gun and fired in Gordon’s direction; Gordon countered the action by shooting back at his old buddy, the bullet narrowly missing his head. Wow, he’s never that lethal, unless – oh yeah, the whole thing about killing his daughter…right. How could he forget?

“Our truce is through, Freeze,” Batman spat, getting back up onto his feet. “Get out of the cave. Now.” Freeze stared at him coldly through his ruby goggles. “I promise that your wife will remain unharmed.”

Two-Face scrambled past Batman and Freeze and hid behind Nora’s tube, still firing at Gordon. So, this is his wife, he thought. Wow. She’s HOT.

“Unacceptable,” Freeze said somberly. “I’ve already found out that you’re not a man of your word.” He aimed his gun at Batman as the gunplay between Gordon and Two-Face ensued; Batman knocked Freeze’s arm to the side and he fired, the entire wall exploding in shards of ice.

Jaded, Two-Face shot at Gordon once more; the bullet shot through the glass tube, pierced through Nora’s thigh, and shot back out the other side, and embedded into the ground. He stared at Freeze and hoped he hadn’t heard that. “Damn…”

Freeze spun around as he heard the glass crack; he viewed the sight before him. The liquid within the tubing drained out onto the floor, and Nora’s body began to sink to the bottom of the tube. “No…” he whispered, his eyes locking on his wife. “NO!!!!” He fired his gun in the tube’s direction, hoping the ice would seal the crack; Two-Face began to run out of the way – Freeze hoped he’d get caught in the explosion. The shards of ice exploded around the tube, sealing it shut; Freeze looked forward and, through the crystal wall, saw Two-Face running away into another section of the cave.

Freeze turned his head to look over his shoulder, somberly. Batman and Gordon just looked at him, not knowing what to expect. “I’m sorry, Batman -” the rocky ground began to crack under the massive weight of the added ice, “-Nora is my entire world.” He aimed his gun at the ground before him and fired; a wall of ice blasted up between him and the two others, and the entire rock platform cracked and fell away from the cavern walls, crashing into the ocean tide a hundred metres below.

Batman and Gordon looked passed the still chiming music box and then on over the edge; Freeze’s self-made iceburg had already floated away into the darkness.

LITTLE FACTS AND BLOOPERS
(by Tim “TWO-FACE” Leighton)

Here is a section that just points out various little facts and bloopers that we have noticed while watching BTAS, STAS and BEYOND countless times. If you have anything to contribute, feel free to do so! Enjoy!

CONTRIBUTED BY STAFF:
Alas, we have nothing. Again!

CONTRIBUTED BY OTHERS:
(by Tiffany)
1) In a past episode of X-MEN, which as you know is produced by Boyd Kirkland (SUB-ZERO, old BTAS director etc), scientists and later the X-men had to cross a bridge to get to Colossus’ prison (the guy with big head gear, Xavier’s brother). I noticed that the bridge/abyss they crossed IS EXACTLY like the one in the batcave…the colors, the layout everything!

FIGURE THIS OUT!
(by Marc Rosenzweig)

Yep, you may remember Mr. Rosenzweig as our exclusive scooper at ToyFair 2001 from a few issues ago. Well, he’s back with a semi-regular column all about figures and other bits of Bat-merchandise! Enjoy!

Marc was so busy prepping his Kevin Conroy article that he just didn’t have time to get a new article in – he’ll be back next issue!

COMIC REVIEWS
(BATMAN: GOTHAM ADVENTURES by Tim “TWO-FACE” Leighton)
(BATMAN BEYOND by Tim “TWO-FACE” Leighton)
(SUPERMAN ADVENTURES by Dick Grayson)

BATMAN BEYOND
ISSUE: “Prey or Hunter; Hunter or Prey” (#18)
WRITTEN BY: Hilary Bader
PENCILS: Craig Rousseau
INKS: Rob Leigh
ISSUED: February 28, 2001 (Cover date May 2001)
RATING: ***1/2 (out of 5 stars)

I often write about problems I have with this title, but with this issue, I must say I was pleasantly surprised. Every now and again in this series we stumble upon a great, satisfying story.

Blight is definately my favourite BEYOND villain, and I was really happy to see him back, albeit briefly. Craig Rousseau and Rob Leigh did a FANTASTIC job of his art – he really looked like he was glowing on the page! Roping the Stalker into the tale was an interesting touch, too – while not a favourite of mine, I did appreciate him in this issue, more than I have in his other animated appearances.

One thing that BATMAN BEYOND has missed for a while was the sense of a true archnemesis for both Terry and Bruce; on BTAS, Batman has the Joker (and a number of other equally terrifying foes), but on BEYOND there is still a void in the rogue’s gallery that Derek Powers completes. This is why I’m happy whenever he’s back – he has close ties to both of the Batmen, always providing great depth to the story.

Having Terry nearly give up his identity to him in the climax was really great, too.

I just hope that he comes back in future issues? Even though he looks rather…well…out of action in the Stalker’s collection (the lead bath was a great idea, by the way), I still would love to see him back in Gotham! There’s so much he could do – he still has a lot bones topick with people – Bruce, Paxton, and so forth. Maybe, just…maybe.

-WE HAVE LOTS OF JLA STUFF HERE FOR YOU, TOO!
*Bruce Timm is currently in Korea visiting the animation shop that will be handling the JLA series.
*Storyboards of the pilot has been completed and are ready to be shipped overseas to begin production.
*November 2001 will be the premiere date.
*The crew behind JL is still unsure whether the show will air as an hour or 30 minutes. It does look like it’ll be in a prime-time slot, though!
*There will be episodes focusing on specific characters. A Wonder Woman episode is currently in the works. An Aquaman episode is expected, and a Green Lantern episode (the premiere) has already been greenlighted.
*There will be a sub-plot throughout the season, behind each epic battle, that will lead to a big finale. (Much like how the first seasons of BATMAN BEYOND and SUPERMAN were structured.)
*The Injustice Gang? Maybe.
*The series will take place in roughly the same universe and continuity as TNBSA.
*New voice cast revelations:
Phillip LaMarr (Static Shock) – Green Lantern
Carl Lumbly (Batman: Sub-Zero) – Martian Manhunter

-Paul Dini is pondering ideas for a second BATMAN BEYOND direct-to-video movie, but nothing, repeat, NOTHING has been greenlit by the studio just yet.

*BATMAN: YEAR ONE (BATMAN 5) NEWS:
-The projected release date for this movie will be sometime in 2002 – but I wouldn’t say it’d be out til a year or two after that.
-YEAR ONE will be set in the 1970’s.
-Antonio Sabato, Jr., has announced that he would love to play Batman in a movie. Read the article here: http://www.fandom.com/batman/editorial.asp?action=page&obj_id=257865#
-Two names are being thrown about as being offered the role of the young Bruce Wayne/Batman for Aronofsky’s YEAR ONE movie: Jared Leto and Aaron Eckhart.
-Jack Nicholson IS still interested in doing another Bat-film if he were ever asked by the WB, who can’t seem to get around the fact that his character died in the first movie.
-Read an interview with Darren Aronofsky here:
http://www.fandom.com/batman/editorial.asp?action=page&obj_id=248753

*BATMAN: YEAR TWO (BATMAN 6) NEWS:
-Yep, you guessed it! The sequel-hungry WB is already planning a sequel to Aronofsky’s YEAR ONE adaption. Whether this is going to be based on the YEAR TWO comic storyline (which, in my opinion, is NOT that great) or another story (like a LONG HALLOWEEN or an original tale) is unknown.

*BATMAN BEYOND: LIVE ACTION NEWS:
-Word has it that Dini & Co. are moving well along with their script, and it may be in the second draft already!
-This is NOT official, but rumblings at the WB seem to indicate BATMAN BEYOND will make it to theatres before YEAR ONE does.

*BATMAN BEYOND: THE FOURTH ANIMATED MOVIE
-Nothing new today…just expect it to revolve around Nightwing, folks.

*CATWOMAN
-Yep, you heard it! A new script for the long-procrastinated CATWOMAN movie has surfaced with a Nov 2000 cover date.
-Batman has yet to officially have a cameo appearance.
-It looks like this Catwoman won’t even be named Selina Kyle…what’s up with that?

The lead role of the 15 year old Clark will be played by Tom Welling; the WB has already order 13 episodes of the series for the Fall of 2001. For some pictures of welling, check here:

Included on these DVDs (particularly BATMAN and BATMAN FOREVER) will be additional footage, trailers, behind the scenes info, and more!!!!! We’ll keep you posted!
-WARNER BROS. STUDIO STORES are closing at the end of April 2001; this is somehow due to the merger between AOL and TIME WARNER a number of months ago. Bigger stores (such as in Los Angeles, Chicago, Cleveland, New York) will stay open longer, but will ultimately be shutting down. Thanks to “Grimm Doomm” in Columbus, OH, for this unfortunate news.
-BATMAN: OVERDRIVE, the new BTAS-based game for PSX and N64, puts you in the driver’s seat of the Batmobile, Batcycle, and many other Bat-vehicles. You even get to play as any of the villains, should you desire to do so! It features (in no particular order), the Joker, Harley Quinn, Mr. Freeze, Two-Face, Clayface, Poison Ivy, the Scarecrow, Killer Croc, the Penguin, the Mad Hatter, the Ventriloquist/Scarface, Calendar Girl, Roxie Rockett, Firefly, Catwoman, and Bane. Go to the following link to see some shots of the villain lineup, some shots of Batman persuing the Joker, and the exit to the Batcave.

-BATMAN: TOTAL CHAOS will be available for Game Boy Colour later this year. It is based on the NEW BATMAN ADVENTURES style (BTAS), and allows you to play as either Batman or Batgirl vs. Two-Face, Bane, Poison Ivy, and the Joker (among others) over 18 levels. (Judging by the pics I’ve seen, you’ll also encounter Mr. Freeze, the Penguin, and maybe even Killer Croc.)
